SUMMARY:
Our client is seeking a highly skilled Secondary Plant Design Engineer to join their engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, reviewing, and delivering secondary systems for substations and power utility projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, client specifications, and project requirements.

POSITION INFO:

Develop and review secondary system designs for substations (up to [insert voltage level] kV).
Prepare schematics, wiring diagrams, protection & control drawings, and interface diagrams.
Design and configure protection, automation, and SCADA systems.
Perform fault studies, relay settings calculations, and coordination reports where required.
Ensure compliance with IEC, NRS, SANS, and utility-specific standards.
Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, FATs, SATs, and site commissioning support.
Collaborate with primary plant engineers, project managers, and construction teams.
Provide technical input for tenders, proposals, and project planning.
Ensure all engineering documentation is completed accurately and delivered on time.

Requirements

BEng/BSc/BTech in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
Minimum 3–7 years experience in secondary plant/substation design.
Strong understanding of protection schemes, C&I, SCADA, and substation automation systems.
Proficiency with design tools such as EPLAN, DigSilent, AutoCAD, or similar.
Experience working with utilities, EPCs, or engineering consultancies.
Knowledge of protection relays (e.g., Siemens, ABB, GE, SEL).
Excellent communication, report-writing, and documentation skills.

Preferred

Registration with ECSA (PrEng/PrTech) or working towards registration.
Experience in renewable energy grid connection projects.
Familiarity with Eskom standards and grid code requirements.
