Senior Back-End Developer (Spring Boot)

SUMMARY:
A leading medical diagnostic services provider is looking for an experienced Back-End Developer to join their technical team in Cape Town. Their digital platforms power the entire specimen journey — from test requests and specimen collection to laboratory processing, data analysis, and clinical reporting that supports healthcare decision-making.

POSITION INFO:
As part of a major systems-renewal initiative, this role offers the opportunity to work on modernising critical healthcare systems. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining scalable backend systems and robust APIs that support enterprise and client-facing applications.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain back-end services using Java and Spring Boot
• Design, build, and optimise SQL queries, stored procedures, and database structures
• Develop and maintain RESTful APIs for internal and external integrations
• Collaborate with front-end and mobile teams to deliver complete end-to-end solutions
• Write secure, reusable, and well-documented code aligned with development standards
• Participate in code reviews and continuous improvement initiatives
• Maintain applications and provide technical support when required
• Provide accurate work estimates and ensure timely feature delivery
• Create and maintain software design and architecture documentation

• Strong experience with Java (version 8 or higher) and Spring Boot
• Experience building RESTful and/or SOAP services
• Solid understanding of microservices architecture
• Experience with test driven development (TDD)
• Strong experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases
• Knowledge of application security best practices
• Solid understanding of Agile/Scrum development methodologies

• Familiarity with Angular or other front-end frameworks
• Experience with MongoDB
• Experience with InterSystems IRIS / Cache ObjectScript
• Exposure to healthcare integration protocols (HL7, DICOM, FHIR, and XML)
• Experience using Git, Jenkins, Docker, Flyway, and Jira
• Experience with Keycloak authentication and integration

• 5+ years' post-qualification experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field
• 10+ years' relevant experience if no formal Degree is held
