POSITION INFO:

Introduction
A well known mining operation in Limpopo is looking for a Senior Commercial Manager

Purpose of the Role

To lead the Mine commercial team as a financial partner advising the mine Leadership Team to drive sustainable business performance through the integration of operational processes with commercial acumen.


Key Responsibilities:

Performance & Delivery

Planning & Budgeting

  • Cascade financial targets down to work areas on site, for consideration and approval by GM, incorporating appropriate level of stretch
  • Drive the budgeting and forecasting processes on site, including site capital expenditure budgets and forecasts, in continual alignment with SLT, BU and Group
  • Provide advice and assistance to GM and leadership in developing budgets
  • Analyse and provide feedback on discipline budget inputs before providing to GM and CFO for sign-off, acting as quality gate in budgeting process
  • Prepare forward looking risks and opportunities associated with budgets and forecasts
  • Provide business case support for on-site SIB capital expenditure decisions; make recommendations on capital expenditure decisions and trade-offs between business cases, accounting for system constraints
  • Provide financial information as input to development of Life of Asset Plan and Resource Development Plan

 Reporting & Controls

  • Provide financial reporting to the leadership and Managed Operations/Group in time and at required level of quality, adhering to Group reporting standards
  • Act as first point of contact for business information, cost accounting and ad-hoc reporting for the leadership, Managed Operations, Group and external auditors
  • Drive the mine financial performance as per budget and forecasts, track delivery against plan using effective cost control mechanisms, and challenge outcomes, ensuring budget holders do not exceed allocated spend
  • Manage and ensure adherence to site capital expenditure plans, monitor execution of activities and Capital expenditure, and control utilisation of any contingencies
  • Support budget owners to provide transparency on the financial impact of their decisions from a cost and capital efficiency perspective
  • Undertake post investment reviews to ensure capital spend effectiveness
  • Proactively provide financial data insights to the leadership to inform operational decision making
  • Ensure compliance with delegation of authority levels on site and ensure implementation of financial standards (e.g., business integrity)

 

Commercial Continuous Improvement

  • Continuously identify and assess improvement opportunities within Commercial
  • Proactively identify Commercial-specific challenges and opportunities that new technology could address, seek input from Group subject matter experts who lead solution design, and embed new technologies (e.g., data analytic capabilities) into the on-site Commercial work
  • Provide feedback on Finance system requirements developed at Managed Operations and Group level and support implementation of standard tools

 

Site Performance Improvement

  • Drive performance management and improvement by consolidating and communicating management reporting insights (e.g., discrepancies in Balanced Scorecard, operational headwinds analysis) across disciplines
  • Identify key value drivers and operational cost drivers across the value chain, to facilitate value based steering of operational decisions
  • Advise discipline managers and superintendents on operational cost performance improvement opportunities
  • Support disciplines in financial modelling and scenario analysis of improvement opportunities to develop business cases
  • Actively supply performance analysis insights & benchmarks
  • Identify cross-discipline continuous improvement opportunities
  • Advise GM and CFO on priority initiatives to expedite
  • Support working capital management and optimisation initiatives (e.g., stockpile transparency) in close cooperation with planning roles

On-site Integration

  • Own and manage the interfaces to Global Shared Services, proactively ensuring and improving relevant service delivery in time and at required level of quality (e.g., accuracy of reports)
  • Guide formulation and management of site-specific, non-standardised contracts with value below minimum threshold
  • Act as on-site interface to IM, Supply Chain and Legal for budgeting/financial resourcing implications 

Sustainability & Social

  • Manage delivery of the sustainability activities as relevant to the discipline and set out in the Building Forever Plan to improve sustainability performance over time
  • Implement and participate in processes that build relationships with key local stakeholders

Safety & Health

  • Oversee consistent application of Safety & Health principles in all discipline interactions and take personal responsibility for safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities
  • Develop discipline-specific plans/systems to reduce exposure to discipline-specific risks
  • Monitor and ensure effectiveness of discipline Safety & Health systems

People & Teams

  • Create a purpose-led, high-performing culture within the discipline that is aligned with the company values, is inclusive and promotes diversity
  • Ensure that the discipline specific systems, symbols and behaviours reinforce desired culture and align with the Group values
  • Communicate operation''s goals and direction, making it digestible for the teams and communicate across teams
  • Lead effective employee & contractor management processes for the discipline
  • Drive people development within discipline
  • Engage in local dispute resolution with employee representative bodies as relevant to discipline, escalate as required

Compliance

  • Lead compliance of the discipline with external (legislative, regulatory, permitting) local requirements as a minimum level of site performance
  • Ensure compliance with De Beers Group requirements within discipline on site
  • Develop required compliance governance for the discipline
  • Oversee investigation of incidents (safety, health, environmental and social) occurring within the discipline


Minimum experience & qualifications required

  • Post Graduate/Tertiary qualifications within Business Accounting, Finance, Economics

 Technical Knowledge:

  • Operations:
    • Key operational and financial performance metrics
    • Key value drivers across site value chain and interdependence of key levers
    • Operational process steps and value streams on site
    • Principles and elements of the Operating Model focussing on Work Management and its implications on the discipline
    • Project management fundamentals
    • New technologies and their impact on operational activities within scope of role
    • Business improvement tools and techniques
  • Commercial:
    • Commercial/business drivers across value chain, business performance variability and underlying causes that define subsequent actions
    • Advanced financial metrics, cost and value management & budgeting tools
    • Technical accounting standards, tools & best practices
  • Management:
    • methodologies and detailed processes requiring site commercial integration
    • Financial forecasting techniques, in line with methodology
    • Risk management techniques and critical controls
    • Value chain management within discipline, and awareness of interdependencies across value chain steps
    • Leadership tools for creating a culture of purpose–led high performance and change
    • Advanced data integrity assurance, analysis and management for decision-making

    • Safety, health and environment, legislative, statutory, regulatory and permitting requirements and standards
