Are you passionate about transforming safety culture in high-risk environments? Do you thrive underground, shoulder-to-shoulder with supervisors and crews?
This role offers the chance to drive meaningful, lasting behavioural change in one of the world’s most challenging and dynamic mining settings.
We are looking for a hands-on, respected, and influential Safety Culture Coach to lead behavioural transformation and embed Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) practices directly into frontline operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive Behavioural Safety Underground:
- Deliver short, impactful point-of-work coaching sessions during active shifts.
- Observe real-time behaviour and provide immediate, constructive feedback.
- Build strong safety habits within crews without disrupting production.
- Promote peer coaching and a supportive learning culture.
- Build Strong, Credible Leaders:
- Coach supervisors and shift bosses to become effective safety leaders.
- Strengthen their ability to conduct critical control verifications and risk assessments.
- Support difficult safety conversations and build confidence, presence, and accountability.
- Integrate Safety into Daily Operational Routines:
- Embed BBS and behavioural coaching into pre-starts, shift handovers, and MOS routines.
- Support incident investigations and ensure that learnings are embedded.
- Monitor safety indicators and help drive continuous operational improvement.
- Lead Cultural Change:
- Drive a zero-harm safety mindset across the operation.
- Build trust, psychological safety, and open communication.
- Navigate unionised environments and build strong stakeholder relationships.
- Transfer coaching capability for long-term sustainability beyond the project.
Job Experience & Skills Required (Ideal Candidate Profile):- 8+ years mining operations experience with strong underground exposure (gold highly preferred).
- Proven success implementing Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) programmes.
- Strong coaching background with frontline and supervisory teams.
- Solid understanding of mining safety systems, hazard identification, and critical controls.
- Experience with cultural change, incident investigation, and working in unionised environments.
- Familiarity with South African mining legislation.
- Required Qualifications:
- Mine Overseer, Mine Manager Certificate, or equivalent mining qualification.
- Safety Management qualification or Certification.
- Coaching Certification or proven coaching competence.
- Valid medical fitness for underground work.
- Highly Advantageous:
- Engineering or Safety-related Degree/Diploma.
- Professional registration (ECSA, SAIOH, and SACPCMP).
- Formal BBS or coaching Certifications.
- Experience with trust-building, psychological safety, or transformation programmes.
- Lean/continuous improvement background.
