CORE PURPOSE OF JOB |
The purpose of this job, located in the Unit for Statistical Consultation, is to enhance research capacity at Nelson Mandela University and ensure the integrity and quality of research produced at the institution by providing comprehensive, statistical consultation service to all staff members engaged in academic (non-contract) research and postgraduate students registered at the University. |
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS |
- To provide statistical consulting and research support for staff and postgraduate students
- To provide general and advanced statistical and methodological consulting for stakeholders
- To provide instructional workshops and other training on basic and advanced statistical techniques
- To assist staff to gain experience with one or more statistical software packages (e.g. R, SPSS, SAS, Statistica, AMOS, etc.)

CORE COMPETENCIES |

- Possess sufficient specialist knowledge to undertake a wide range of statistical consultancy projects
- Knowledge of statistical software for analysing data (e.g. R, SPSS, SAS, Statistica, AMOS, etc.), and other standard office software such as Excel and Word are required
- Demonstrated ability to liaise with stakeholders to understand their needs in the domain of statistics and data analysis, formulating and solving their statistical problems, and interpreting and delivering the results of the statistical analysis
- Demonstrate proficiency in organizing and leading training workshops to build research capacity of post-graduate students and academics at Nelson Mandela University
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Strong facilitation and mentoring skills
- Excellent people management skills, interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work well under pressure, learn continuously and adapt to changing internal and external environments

REQUIREMENTS |
|
A masters degree in Statistics, Mathematics or an equivalent discipline (a doctoral qualification would be considered an advantage) plus two years relevant experience where such experience includes:
- Statistical consultation and research support, preferably in a Higher Education, Research Agency, Research Council or similar environment
- Experience in leading training workshops to build research capacity
- Strong analytical skills
