A Senior Researcher (2 Years Fixed Term Contract) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Health Systems Enablement & Innovation (HSEI) Unit in Centurion - Gauteng.

Background

The Health Systems Enablement & Innovation (HSEI), based at the University of the Witwatersrand, studies enablement amongst individual patients, patient populations, health services and health systems with a particular focus on underserved or vulnerable populations. The aim is to help South Africa and African underserved and vulnerable populations and their national health systems realize their true potential. HSEI supports national health systems through healthcare delivery redesign, professional advice and research guided by our motto “Dignity through healthcare.”

We seek a dynamic, enthusiastic and self-motivated senior researcher to be part of our health systems research portfolio. Research in this portfolio focuses on the health economic analysis (including costing studies, cost-effectiveness and benefits of healthcare interventions), health systems and health policy. Successful applicants will develop and lead studies and analyze and publish data from research projects on research questions that contribute to the evidence-base for improving access to and delivery of quality health services.

Main purpose of the job

• To conduct research with health economics, systems and policy focus in the HSEI Unit
• To ensure structured development, implementation, analysis and reporting of research studies focusing on costing, cost-effectiveness and benefits of healthcare interventions, health systems and health policies

Location

• Office of the Health Systems Enablement & Innovation Unit, Centurion

Key performance areas

• Write research and funding proposals and obtain research funding

• Implement and oversee all aspects of research projects including:
• Developing important policy-relevant questions
• Obtaining ethical approval
• Writing research protocols and SOPs
• Developing and designing research tools
• Coordinating fieldwork (data collection, interviews, etc.)
• Monitoring study progress
• Writing progress reports to stakeholders including networks and funders
• Training research staff
• Conducting data analysis and writing up results

• Present scientific findings at research conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals as well as disseminate research findings to universities and other stakeholders such as the community, funders and media
• Perform other tasks and contribute to organizational development and management as may be needed from time to time
• Supervise junior research staff and study teams
• Provide research support for relevant projects in the unit

Required minimum education and training

• Master’s degree in Health Economics or Health Systems or Public Health Medicine specialist
• A PhD in a relevant field will be an added advantage

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

• Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Expertise in Health Economics and/or Health Systems Research
• Strong Research Skills
• Demonstrated writing and communication skills
• Working Overtime/Weekend hours, and Local/ Sub-Saharan and International traveling may be required from time to time
• Communicate effectively with participants, managers, clinicians, strategic partners and sponsors/funders
• Work effectively, collaboratively and amicably with team

Required minimum work experience

• Minimum 3 years of research experience in public health, health systems, health economics or health policy or comparable professional experience
• Experience in implementing independent projects and managing study staff
• Expertise in qualitative or quantitative research and use of data analysis software
