POSITION INFO:
We are looking for a Senior Technician to install, maintain, test, and commission protection and telecontrol (SCADA/RTU) systems in substations. The role involves troubleshooting and repairing protection relays, meters, RTUs, and communication devices, ensuring reliable system operation and compliance with industry standards. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will support engineers in implementing protection schemes, SCADA integration, and system modifications while leading and mentoring junior technicians. Candidates should hold a National Diploma or equivalent in Electrical Engineering with 5–8 years’ experience in protection systems, substation work, and SCADA/RTU integration. Vendor-specific training and experience in substation automation will be advantageous.
What you'll do:
- Performing routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and calibration of protection relays, meters, RTUs, and SCADA communication equipment.
- Installing and commissioning new protection and telecontrol devices, including relays, RTUs, IEDs, and associated wiring.
- Troubleshooting faults in protection systems, telecontrol networks, and SCADA communications.
- Coordinating with engineers for complex system testing, commissioning, and fault analysis.
- Supervising and guiding junior technicians during installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Updating technical documentation, including wiring diagrams, relay settings, SCADA configuration, and as-built drawings.
Your Expertise:
- 5–8 years of hands-on experience in protection systems, scheme testing, commissioning, and telecontrol/SCADA systems.
- Experience in high voltage substations, site work, maintenance, and fault troubleshooting.
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior technicians.
- Experience integrating protection systems with SCADA and RTU communication networks is highly desirable
- Computer literacy
- Technical report writing skills
- Ability to adapt and learn reasonably fast.
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members and customers.
- Experience with substation automation and SCADA network configuration.
- Strong knowledge of protection relays, switchgear, RTUs, SCADA systems, and communication protocols.
- Practical understanding of electrical installation, testing, and commissioning procedures.
Qualifications:
- Essential Qualifications:
- National Diploma or Higher Certificate in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Trade certification or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems.
- Vendor-specific training on protection relays (e.g., GE, ABB, SEL), RTUs, and SCADA equipment.
Personal attributes:
- Ability to adapt and learn reasonably fast.
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members and customers.
- Ability to adapt to different application software related to the products.
- Effective team player with good communication skills.
- Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
