POSITION INFO:
CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
The purpose of a senior technician position is to contribute advanced technical skills, leadership, and experience to drive the success and effectiveness of the technical team in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The candidate needs to facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented at the Nelson Mandela University at undergraduate and post graduate level in all laboratories of the department of Mechanical Engineering. To candidate needs to be involved in community engagement activities. The candidate needs to support the Nelson Mandela University values and to implement the KPI’s required for the position.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
• Implement and manage drone technology and renewable energy experimental work for research and educational purposes, ensuring seamless integration into existing programs.
• Provide training sessions to faculty, researchers, and students on operation, data collection, and analysis.
• Collaborate with researchers to design and implement research projects, supporting data collection and analysis.
• Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and repair of related equipment to ensure optimal performance
• Develop equipment in the laboratories to keep abreast with industry. Install and commission new equipment and check if equipment meets required standards. Calibration of equipment.
• Stay current with drone regulations and ensure all operations comply with local and SACAA regulations.
• Explore and recommend advancements in technology, sensors, and applications to enhance research capabilities.
• Maintain accurate records of drone-related activities, including flight logs, maintenance records, and training materials.
• Takes responsibility for the implementation of safety standards asnd quality assurance in all laboratories.

CORE COMPETENCIES
• Experience in Drone Technology and renewable energy experimental work.
• In-depth knowledge of local and national knowledge of regulations regarding drone technology and obtaining necessary certifications for local drone usage.
• Ability to stay current with drone regulations and ensure all operations comply with local and SACAA regulations.
• Proficiency in installing, calibrating, operating, and maintaining various laboratory equipment.
• Ability to provide a safe and healthy work environment, conduct risk assessments, and educate others on safety regulations.
• Ability to schedule work and provide technical guidance to staff.
• Proven track record of staying updated on emerging trends and technology in the engineering industry
• Ability to conduct training programs for staff, technicians, and students to enhance their skills and knowledge.
• Ability to collaborate with researchers to support data collection and analysis of experimental investigations.
• The ability to convey technical information clearly and understandably, both in verbal and written forms.
• Ability to work well with other members of the Department and as part of a team.
REQUIREMENTS
• Successful candidates may hold at least BTech or BEng or BEngTech Hons in Mechanical / Mechatronics/ Electrical Engineering. Registered or finalizing a MEng in Mechanical Engineering will be to your advantage.
• A minimum of 5 years technical experience,
• Professional registration: a minimum of Mechanical/Mechatronics Technician or Technologists will be to your advantage.
• Proven record of excellence in activities in above mentioned fields.
