SUMMARY:
Software Engineering Manager required to join a growing software company in their Edinburgh City Centre office.
POSITION INFO:
Software Engineering Manager required to join a growing software company in Edinburgh. You will be helping to build and grow a new development team, during the organisation''s continued success.
The company:
They are, first and foremost, a software company and you will be joining at a very important time. Over the past 12 months (and through Covid), they have witnessed their best year of sales and this is down to a growing list of clients and continued hard work. I should add that the business is also entirely self-funded! They are based out of central Edinburgh and have ambitious plans to grow as a company. Currently sitting at a headcount of around 60 across the business, you will be leading a development team of around 6-8 staff amongst a wider Engineering function of around 30, however there are plans to become 50 over the next 12 months or so.
The client list for this company is ever expanding and this varies from start-ups to large, global enterprises. With this growth has come a diversification of the client portfolio - an important point during these uncertain times. The teams operate in an Agile manor and this is promoted across the business. In terms of the solutions they provide, this stretches the full software lifecycle from Front-End Web to API Development and Web Development.
The role:
Reporting into the Head of Software Engineering, you will be leading a team of six to eight Software Engineers, a Product Owner and a Designer. This team is specifically a Back-End team with a strong focus on Java, so having lead teams in this technology would be highly advantageous. You will be tasked with successfully facilitating the development team as well as interacting with the client in order to understand what is needing to be developed. On top of this, you will ideally have come from a Software Engineer background as you will be helping to Architect the solutions and problem solve, and therefore will need to understand the technologies (not coding). At present, the whole team is working from home (as per Government guidelines), however this role can be largely remote working in the long-term, ideally with the ability to get to the office roughly a few times a month.
The position is both managerial and technical, with this person still having the opportunity to get involved in general architecture and setting up technical best practices. It would also be handy if you have prior client facing experience, as you will need to speak to clients at a highly technical level on regular occasions. Typically, the Engineering teams work across a diverse tech stack, however this team will specifically focus on Java and Back-End development. There will be three other Engineering Managers to bounce ideas off of and work alongside. This role would suit someone who has managed a Java or Back-End focused Development team, maybe a Tech Lead or Principal Engineer who has team lead responsibilities currently, and who can still understand the tech and solutions.
