POSITION INFO:
Background
Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.
Main purpose of the job
- To administer chemotherapy to cancer patients as prescribed by the oncology doctors and educate cancer patients and families about available treatment options and procedures related to the disease

Key performance areas
- Educate cancer patients and families about available treatment options and procedures related to the disease
- Understand the administration, indications, dosages, regimens, and adverse effects of cancer chemotherapy
- Provide specialist oncology nursing for patients with cancer who require treatment and support throughout the continuum of care
- Undertake a comprehensive patient assessment to include physical, psychological, and social elements of care and refer appropriately
- Develop and implement plans of care in conjunction with a multi-disciplinary team
- To administer chemotherapy and symptom control measures as prescribed
- Understand and manage potential complications of prescribed cancer treatments
- Monitor and evaluate patient’s response to treatment and amend in accordance with the doctor’s prescription
- Ensure records are kept up to date
Required minimum education and training
- 3-year diploma or degree in General Nursing
- Specialist Oncology Nursing Diploma
Professional Body Registration
- South African Nursing Council
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
- An activist health systems researcher with an interest in advocacy and rural health equity
- Compassion and ability to work with patients diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses
- Experience in a clinical research environment would be advantageous
- Basic knowledge and application of palliative care principles for cancer patients would be advantageous
Required minimum work experience
- Minimum 2 years of oncology experience
