POSITION INFO:
A leading underground coal mining operation are seeking 4 qualified and experienced Strata Control Officers to join its technical services team. This role is crucial to ensuring the geotechnical integrity of underground excavations and proactive strata stability management.
Requirements
- Matric with Maths, Science and Geology
- Advanced Certificate or Higher Certificate in Rock Engineering or Safety
- Strata Control Officer Certificate of Competency (Coal) – Chamber of Mines
- 3 years underground experience in a strata control, observer, or geotechnical capacity
- Registered with SANIRE
- Strong communication, assertiveness, report writing, and facilitation skills
- Ability to work independently and maintain integrity in safety-critical decisions
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine and ad hoc underground inspections to assess ground conditions and support compliance
- Implement and monitor rock engineering systems, strata control tools, and trigger action response plans
- Evaluate support systems, perform audits, and escalate red/yellow triggers to appropriate levels
- Provide coaching to mining teams on support standards and ground control procedures
- Contribute to short-term planning and participate in investigation of fall-of-ground (FoG) incidents
- Assist with SAMRASS 3 reporting and macro/micro stability audits
- Liaise with Rock Engineers and SHE departments for continuous improvement of excavation stability
