Structural Engineer (3 year FTC)

POSITION INFO:

Purpose of this Role
The purpose of this position is to provide strategic structural engineering design and oversight, as well as independent, professional quality assurance in order to reduce risks for the organisation’s clients. This role is responsible for the structural engineering components related to planning, design and supervision of construction and engineering projects undertaken by the organisation and its clients.

Key Accountability

Strategic Function
• Provide strategic tricultural engineering design, oversight and advice from the outset of any project from a Structural Engineering perspective.

Operational Functions
• Continuous Quality Assurance
o Oversee quality and accuracy of prototype and design drawings as provided by the client and professional service providers
o Research and advise on best practice delivery
o Provide technical input into project implementation plans, standard contractual documentation (best practice, governance items)
o Provide occupation/profession specific quality control during project execution
o Seek to minimize project cost and enhance value for money, while keeping regulatory standards and quality
o Keep abreast of, and advise on, local statutory regulations and manage incorporation of these regulations into relevant programmes
o Project/programme schedule and cost control

• Continuous Improvement of Cost, Structural Engineering, Design and Estimating Services
o Undertake condition assessment functions.
o Keep abreast of new developments and technologies in the field of structural engineering
o Liaise with external engineering firms and associations regarding documentation, benchmarking rates and alternative procedures to ensure improvements and cost saving
o Optimize standard guides, methods and techniques to evaluate the utilisation of available resources
o Evaluate and identify new initiatives or enhanced/improved products
o Identify and investigate problem areas to recommend possible solutions
o Assist the Governance, Risk and Compliance Lead in conducting internal audits for assurance that standards and procedures are being applied
o Compile and present special reports when required
o Broad structural design skills
o Apply engineering principles to devise and deliver new and innovative approaches in order to solve complex problems
o Use relevant software packages and CAD technology for design and simulation purposes
o Preparation of specifications, proposals and other tender documentation
o Liaise with construction contractors to ensure that the newly erected buildings and civil works are structurally sound and safe

Qualification and experience
o Engineering degree (BEng/BScEng/BTech) or relevant qualification with Structural Engineering specialisation
o Compulsory registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer.
o 8 years Post registration working experience
o Driver’s License code 08.


Skills and Knowledge
o MS Office proficient
o Good understanding of scheduling programs such as MS Projects and Primavera
o Excellent knowledge of Structural engineering design programs and the application thereof
o Estimating and value engineering of construction services and works
o Project and contract management
o Budgeting / cost planning
o Strong programme management skills
o Strong verbal and written communication skills, effective presentation skills and skills to express complex concepts in business terms
o Strong analytical skills
