SUMMARY:
provide a service to Mine Management on rock mass behaviour, underground support, slope stability (including surface excavation and residue deposits), the theory and practice of draw control, concrete technology and to advise on general Geotechnical Engineering/ Rock Mechanics problems as per legal appointment 14.1.8.

POSITION INFO:

Minimum Requirements:

B Sc Hons Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Mining Engineering or Civil Engineering.

A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in underground massive mining – preferably in a block cave and mechanised development environment.

COM Certificate in Rock Mechanics.

Experience with Cave Management Solutions – please indicate clearly on your CV

Management Development Programme (MDP) or equivalent qualification.

Computer Literacy and Microsoft Office Suite (Intermediate)

Valid driver''s license.

Providing geotechnical engineering services to mine management, production and engineering.

Planning & Budget: Provide input into the departmental budget.

Manage the budget for the area of responsibility.

Responsible for the generation of cost saving ideas.

Ensure compliance with the relevant legal requirements of the MHSA (1996) and the Mineral & Petroleum Resources Development Act (2002) in terms of rock engineering.

Develop and implement all codes of practice, policies, procedures and standards for the effective management of safe working conditions in terms or rock engineering related responsibilities and legal requirements.

Coordinate the monitoring of all operational activities in terms of conformance to procedures, standards and legal requirements for all rock engineering responsibilities.

Continuously investigate support elements, methods, products and techniques that have the potential to benefit safety and reduce cost.

Design and supervise tests on new support elements, methods, products and techniques as required.

The testing and quality assurance of all rock support in underground excavations.

Geotechnical monitoring of main infrastructure including, but not limited to, shafts, second escape ways, large excavations, production footprint etc. and providing assurance that it is safe for use.

Ensure monitoring systems are in place to track surface ground subsidence and movement, underground excavation deterioration and seismicity related to cave propagation and mining activities.

Provide Geotechnical expertise and skills to the operation; advising on Geotechnical solutions to enhance or ensure the effectiveness of the operation.

Ensure capacity and bench strength of functional talent pool by coordinating, directing and leading Geotechnical talent in area of responsibility.

Train and mentor junior staff.

Provide specialised discipline input into mine planning and other project studies.

Manage external service and software providers in term of Rock Engineering inputs into production, projects and planning.

Co-ordinate and manage geotechnical stress modelling for new mine designs.

Engage internal and external stakeholders on Geotechnical related matters, and support the operation on Geotechnical related engagement.

Establish and maintain good working relationships and an effective / sound Communication system with the Technical Services Function and the operation.

Manage the Rock Engineering section of the Technical Service Department.

Ensure that all Geotechnical Engineering reporting is aligned with standards, guidelines and schedules.

Monitor and evaluate performance against established strategies, frameworks, systems and programme, and identify and advise on opportunities for improvement to provide assurance to the Manager: Technical Services.

Participate in a sustainable process to identify, assess and rank Geotechnical risk as these relate to the operation, in order to promote a Geotechnical and risk-aware culture, ensure that any potential impact is understood, and facilitate effective decision making, Geotechnical risk mitigation and provide this as input into the ERM program.

Contribute to the identification, analysis and interpretation of Geotechnical risks within the operation and contribute to the design and implementing of strategies and systems to mitigate risk and to prevent and reduce loss of the operation''s assets.
