Supervisor: AFS

SUMMARY:
Our client, a well-established national Accounting and Auditing firm, is seeking an experienced Supervisor: AFS to lead and oversee the Annual Financial Statements (AFS) department.

This is a key supervisory role combining advanced technical financial statement preparation with workflow management, team development, quality control, and first-line review responsibilities. The successful candidate will ensure that all work submitted for Partner sign-off is accurate, compliant, and genuinely partner-ready.

POSITION INFO:
The Opportunity: Reporting directly to the Partner, you will take ownership of the AFS department's workflow, quality standards, staff coaching, and technical output whilst remaining actively involved in the preparation and review of annual financial statements and independent review engagements. Minimum Requirements: Degree in Accounting with completed Articles essential. B.Com Honours in Accounting or equivalent. CA (SA) or similar professional designation preferred. Minimum 3 years' experience producing Annual Financial Statements. Proven ability to independently prepare partner-ready financial statements across multiple entity types. Experience reviewing and coaching team members on AFS preparation. Strong knowledge of ISRE 2400 and Independent Review engagements. Demonstrated experience managing multiple concurrent engagements and deadlines. Advanced proficiency in CaseWare or similar financial statement compilation software. Working knowledge of at least two accounting systems such as Xero, Pastel or Eureka. Key Responsibilities Annual Financial Statement Preparation: Prepare annual financial statements for companies, close corporations, trusts, NPOs and sole proprietors. Ensure full disclosure compliance, accurate tax computations and reconciliation to trial balances. Generate and reconcile trial balances where source information is limited. Prepare financial statements for Independent Review engagements. Quality Assurance & Review: Conduct first-line reviews of all AFS work before Partner submission. Ensure all financial statements meet internal quality standards. Identify recurring errors and implement corrective coaching and training. Workflow Management: Manage and monitor the department's engagement pipeline. Co-ordinate handovers from monthly accounting teams. Balance workload, deadlines and team capacity. Provide regular workflow updates to the Partner. Team Development: Train, mentor and develop AFS Accountants. Identify technical knowledge gaps and implement development plans. Support departmental training and development initiatives. Guide team members in advancing their technical and client management capabilities. Independent Reviews: Oversee Independent Review engagements across the department. Review working papers, financial statements and supporting documentation. Liaise with Audit teams where engagements transition between review and audit frameworks. Client Interaction: Manage client queries and information requests. Engage confidently with clients on technical accounting, disclosure and tax matters. Develop strong client relationship management skills. Escalate commercially sensitive matters to the Account Manager or Partner where required. Key Competencies: Strong technical accounting knowledge. Excellent attention to detail.
