Water Technician

SUMMARY:
We are looking for a skilled Water Technician to assist water loss management, leak detection, and system optimisation projects across the Western Cape.

This role involves practical fieldwork, detailed analysis of water systems, and close collaboration with engineering teams to improve efficiency and reduce losses. The ideal candidate must be fully bilingual in Afrikaans and English.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Water Loss Assessment:

• Conduct detailed audits of water systems to identify and quantify areas of loss.
• Use advanced leak detection equipment, technologies, and methodologies.
• Analyse usage patterns and flow data to detect anomalies, inefficiencies, or leaks.

• Develop technical strategies to reduce water loss, including infrastructure upgrades and operational improvements.
• Work with engineering teams to design and implement water loss control projects.
• Monitor and refine implemented solutions for continuous improvement.
• Introduce AI and automation where applicable to optimise performance.
• Ensure all meters, loggers, and remote monitoring devices are operational, properly programmed, and fit for purpose.
• Plan, manage, and monitor budgets for water loss programmes.

• Conduct routine site inspections to assess system integrity.
• Perform leak pinpointing using specialised tools and services.
• Monitor pressures, flows, and related system indicators.

• Collect, process, and analyse water system performance data.
• Prepare detailed technical reports and presentations.
• Provide recommendations to enhance system efficiency and reduce non-revenue water.
• Perform meter aging analysis, replacement planning, and payback reviews.
• Handle monthly bulk meter readings and data capturing.

• Coordinate with engineers, municipalities, service providers, and internal teams.
• Engage community stakeholders on water conservation awareness where needed.
• Participate in technical meetings and strategy discussions.

• Ensure compliance with applicable bylaws, provincial and national water-related legislation.
• Adhere to relevant SANS standards for water system design and water loss management.
• Stay current with legislative updates and industry best practices.
• Provide guidance to ensure projects remain compliant.

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Water Resource Management, or related field.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in water loss control, leak detection, or similar.
• Valid Code 8 driver’s licence (essential).
• Fluent in Afrikaans and English.
• Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving capability.
• Proficiency with leak detection technologies, loggers, and instrumentation programming.
• Solid understanding of water distribution systems and relevant legislation.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Computer literacy (Windows 365).
• Detail-oriented, technically competent, and able to work independently or within a team.
