SUMMARY:
Workshop Manager with 10 year’s experience in fabrication of structural steel, well versed with Tekla/X steel and a good understanding of steel drawings

POSITION INFO:

We are currently sourcing a Workshop Manager with 10 year’s experience in fabrication of structural steel, well versed with Tekla/X steel and a good understanding of steel drawings for our client. A large part of the job will be spending time on the shop floor managing productivity and motivating staff to ensure a high-quality product is completed on time and within budget. Very hands on position, leading by example.

Job description / core competencies:

Ensure the smooth efficient flow of work through the workshop and to optimize the resources available to achieve a high level of productivity and output at all times.

Listen and act on employee complaints.

Personal relationship with workforce, build trust and respect.

Lead by example

Planning / Controlling.

Receive work orders and drawings.

Plan the routing of product lots through the factory.

Do machine loading and worker allocation.

Establish whether the correct steel is available – if not, submit request to order.

Issue steel and consumables to workers.

Issue drawings to boilermakers once material is cut.

Understand drawings and assist with making up of jigs. Check jigs before commencing with assemblies.

Ensure that jobs are completed on time

When jobs are revised, pull old drawings out of the workshop and replace with revisions. Make sure revisions are affected.

Make sure all drawings are recorded in the book and signed off on completion.

Monitor and review capacity utilisation relative to existing and projected work requirements.

Propose changes in technologies, labour practices, and capacities to improve output.

Establish and implement suitable maintenance programmes and records for all equipment and managing costs in this regard.

Prioritising and planning work through all work centres.

Planning and controlling the flow of work at all times to achieve highest possible level of productivity, ensure priority work is completed on time. Make sure long lead time items are dealt with early on.

Ensure all material is cut and ready for boiler makers before they start a job.

Continuously ensure that all material needed for a job is here and notify the Fabtrol office early if it is not.

Make sure you clearly understand drawings before they are issued to boilermakers and get detailers to fix drawings if necessary, prior to issuing to the boilermakers.

Review all detail drawings at least 2 days prior to their being issued into the shop, then plan around what is required, cut T’s, split beams, rolling to radius, order off mill rolling’s, order PG blanks early, prepare early so that when the boilermakers get their drawings, they have all the parts they require.

Always manage material flow, including moving of materials at low peak hours to ensure that cranes are available during busy working hours.

Utilise to do lists to make sure that you keep track of all work requirements.

Meet deadlines and raise red flags early if you foresee problems arising.

Set work levels and tasks for night shift workers and follow up in the morning to ensure that production levels are met.

Ensure proper planning and always follow up to satisfactory conclusion of all tasks.

Ensure that boilermakers have always work at their tables, ensure that nobody waits for instructions.

Set daily targets for the boilermakers.

Managing overtime, overtime costs are high, this needs to be managed daily.

Create a man-hour schedule for the different disciplines of work.

Production / Productivity / Equipment Management

Managing all consumables and their costs and ensuring they are always available when required.

Ensure that men and machines are fully utilised and working efficiently.

Follow job lots through factory.

Ensure that material is handled as little as possible, avoid double handling.

Expedite priority jobs

Assist with layouts.

Setting housekeeping standards for all production units.

Setting of quality standards for all production activities.

Ensure that machines are set correctly.

Make sure welding is done according to specifications.

Ensure the quality of manufacture and welding is satisfactory.

Safety

Embracing safety and always ensuring compliance.

Ensuring that all staff and new employees have undergone Company mandatory induction and any necessary training before commencing any work.

Keep walkways free from obstacles.

Issue PPE and ensure workers wear it.

Ensure that workers adhere to safe working procedures.

Arrange for regular crane and lifting gear inspections.

Ensure that gas is stored and handled according to safety procedures.

Workforce Management

Appointing suitably skilled people to fill key positions.

Training and development of all staff.

Evaluating supervisor and worker performance, always motivating, and supporting the labour force

Job Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

10 Year’s experience managing fabrication of structural steel

Well versed with Tekla/X steel and a good understanding of steel drawings

Good Leadership qualities, good EQ

Strong character with good people skills

Manage entire workshop staff and meet production deadlines (lead by example)

People motivator

Good planning skills, optimize resources available to achieve high level of productivity and output at all times.

Good understanding of welding

Disciplinarian

Good communicator

Responsible and accountable
