The town was founded in 1838, to serve as the first capital of then South African republic.

While it is unsure which origin of the town’s name is correct, both are interesting.

The first claims that the name originates from ‘Potgieter’ + ‘chef’ + ‘stroom’, attributing the name to the Voortrekker leader and town’s forefather Andries Potgieter, also leader of the emigrants (i.e. ‘chef’), while the ‘stroom’ stem of the word most likely refers to the Mooi River. The only problem is that referring to a leader as ‘chef’ or ‘chief’ was not a frequent occurrence in the Afrikaans spoken at the time.

The second attributes the name to the work ‘Potscherf’, or broken pot – as a result of the cracks that appear in the Mooi River Valley’s soil during times of drought.

World Population Review advises that Potchefstroom had a population of 201 017 at last count in 2024, up from 148 804 in 2011, and 118 070 in 2001.

He writes that Potch “shines with its educational institutions… rich cultural scene, and abundance of outdoor activities”. Further, its “growing economy, educated workforce, and supportive business environment” can make moving here a bonus for any small business or bigger commercial endeavour.

Job opportunities range across academia (university professor, lecturer, or administrator), retail (store manager), construction (infrastructural engineer), agriculture (farm supervisor), and medicine (theatre nurse).

There’s no lack of choice, which means parents living in the area – or moving to the area – have their work cut out for them in making the most appropriate and best-placed decision for their sons and daughters.

Crowdsourced Explorer advises that the pace of life in Potch is very much “small-town living, with city life amenities”. Adventure seekers will feel close to nature here due to the abundance of bike trails and reserves in the vicinity, and the lack of skyscrapers; while young families and retirees are able to enjoy the peace on offer – alongside the bustling student community.

Safety is good, there’s plenty to explore in a cultural capacity, yet most things are in walking/cycling distance so you can save on fuel and get fit simultaneously.

According to Zhuji World, Potch has an average age among residents of 28 years – which is obviously skewed towards the youthful side as a result of the high student population. Other big groups that are resident here include researchers, academics, and business professionals.

While online shopping is a growing trend among Potch’s younger generation and those with decided technical clout, there is also amazing shopping of all kinds (groceries, fashion, and more) to be had at MooiRivier Mall; and crafts/exotic eats to be found at Sebrine’s Fair Flea Market, together with at Die Krat Padstal.

Sporting facilities in and around Potch are plentiful and of a high quality, as a result of the proximity to the North West University. These include:

• the well-equipped Fanie Du Toit sports grounds, which cover around 20ha on the Mooi River banks and include eight rugby fields, 16 tennis courts, four hockey fields, nine all-weather netball courts, three soccer fields, five cricket fields, a softball field, a swimming pool and an athletics track;
• a fully equipped professional gymnasium in the Piet Malan building;
• a High Performance Institute of Sport, housing the School of Biokinetics, Recreation and Sport Science, the Institute for Sports Science and Development, and the North-West Sports Academy;
• an NWU Sport Village, that hosts training camps and sport groups with a view to making it a “home away from home”;
and
• an indoor sports centre with a recreational gym and saunas.

For those not in any way affiliated to the university, you can join the popular Planet Fitness or Virgin Active establishments, or any number of smaller private fitness and sporting clubs.

For the nature lovers: it has what is considered the longest avenue of oak trees in the whole of SA.
For those into art and architecture: you’ll love the neo-classical and art-nouveau influences, mixed with the edginess of student culture (don’t miss the crayon factory!). The town’s Dutch Reformed Church is the oldest one in existence, north of the Vaal Triangle.
For geology fundis: the Vredefort Dome, which lies approximately 120km southwest of Joburg, is representative of a much larger meteorite impact structure, or astrobleme, that dates back 2,023 million years. Not only the world’s oldest, according to the Unesco World Heritage Centre, its radius of 190km also makes it the largest and most deeply eroded astrobleme yet discovered on Earth. While most of the original crater and dome have eroded away to create the fertile farmland of the Free State, a small portion of the dome still remains in the form of a ring of mountainous land, which is located between Parys and Potch. When visiting the site, you’ll surely wonder at the Earth’s history and evolution – and be grateful to witness this only example of an astrobleme’s full geological profile from below the crater floor.
