Electronic Engineer

If you love technology and you want to use your technical skills for good, becoming an electronic engineer is a perfect choice. The field of electronics is growing every year, especially in the medical and automotive industries. Plus, it's never been easier to get started as an electronic engineer.

If you're an engineer who likes to get your hands dirty or are interested in a career that requires problem-solving and creativity, then electronic engineering might be the right choice for you.

What do Electronic Engineers do?

Electronic engineers are responsible for developing and designing new technologies and products that use electricity, electronics and digital systems. They also work on improving existing technology.

The role of an electronic engineer is diverse; some may work as trouble-shooters on large industrial projects, while others may specialise in software development or hardware design. Electronic engineers may also be involved in research and development; they may create prototypes or conduct experiments with new ideas and concepts. Some electronic engineers are responsible for managing teams of people who work together on projects; others may be responsible for managing budgets or other financial aspects of their company's operations.

Electronic Engineer Job Description

Electronic Engineer Job Overview

Electronic engineers are responsible for designing and developing the electronic hardware of everything from cell phones to cars. They use computer-aided design (CAD) programs to create prototypes of new products and then test them to see if they're functional and have a positive user experience.

Responsibilities of a Electronic Engineer

As an electronic engineer, you'll need to:
  • design products such as mobile phones, computers and other electrical appliances;
  • develop new technologies to improve existing products;
  • test new designs to ensure they're fit for purpose;
  • work as part of a team on projects;
  • use computer-aided design (CAD) tools for drawing up designs

Electronic Engineer Qualifications

To become an electronic engineer, you need to study for a bachelor's degree or higher qualification in electronics engineering. You should also have some experience in electronics before you start your course.

Electronic engineers must have a wide range of technical skills, including:

  • Engineering mathematics. They use differential equations to model circuit behaviour and solve problems. They also use probability and statistics to analyse experimental data.

  • Electronics. They must know how to read schematics and use test equipment to troubleshoot circuits. They need to understand how semiconductors work, how to fabricate integrated circuits, and how to design analogue and digital electronic circuits at the transistor level.

  • Control systems. They must be familiar with control system theory and practice, including feedback loops, stability analysis, servo control systems, and computer-controlled feedback systems.

  • Computer hardware and software programming. They must be proficient in computer language software such as C++ or Java. They also need to know how computers work to program them properly for their purposes.

  • Communication skills. They need good oral communication skills to present technical information to colleagues or customers in meetings or seminars; written communication skills are important too because much of their work involves creating reports that explain technical issues in plain language so non-technical people can understand them.
