Bioinformaticist (12 Months Contract) Wits NICD

Main purpose of the job:

• To utilize analytical and programming skills to conduct bioinformatics analysis for respiratory pathogens in both surveillance and research activities and develop bioinformatics capacity

Location:

• NICD Sandringham - Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Perform advanced analysis and interpretation of data produced from next-generation sequencing systems
• Provide high-level bioinformatics support
• Develop, improve, and operate genomic data analysis pipelines and workflows for efficient analysis of data
• Manage and maintain high-quality sequence data and metadata
• Conduct and initiate research in the area of NGS data analysis
• Monitor and manage bioinformatics requests projects to ensure objectives of ongoing studies are achieved
• Assist in funding proposals and research grants
• Participate in training staff, students, and collaborators in bioinformatics analysis

Required minimum education and training:

• MSc in Bioinformatics or equivalent

Required minimum work experience:

• One (1) year of experience in a diagnostic or research laboratory working independently with next-generation sequencing data analysis

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• PhD would be advantageous
• The successful incumbent must have the below:
  • Strong background in bioinformatics
  • Knowledge of Linux and workflows/pipelines
  • Strong Python and R programming skills
