Claims Specialist: Reinsurance to join their Claims team in Pietermaritzburg.
This opportunity is ideal for a technically strong claims professional with extensive experience in
large and complex claims,
reinsurance recoveries, and
stakeholder management. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the performance of the reinsurance portfolio while ensuring claims are managed efficiently, accurately and in accordance with industry best practices.
About the Role
The Claims Specialist: Reinsurance is responsible for managing complex claims involving reinsurer participation and recoveries, ensuring timely claim settlements and maximising recoveries. The role requires technical expertise in short-term insurance claims, strong analytical ability, and the confidence to engage with reinsurers, brokers and other stakeholders.
You will also contribute to reinsurance portfolio performance by analysing claims trends, supporting renewal discussions, identifying operational risks, and driving continuous improvement within the claims function.
POSITION INFO:
Duties & Responsibilities Manage the reinsurance claims portfolio from notification through to final settlement. Ensure timely and accurate processing of large and complex claims. Drive effective reinsurance recovery strategies to maximise recoveries. Assess and manage catastrophe and risk-related claims. Analyse claims trends and emerging risks affecting the reinsurance portfolio. Prepare claims reports and provide technical claims data to support reinsurance renewals. Participate in renewal discussions with reinsurers where required. Identify, assess and report operational risks within the claims environment. Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, reinsurers, assessors, repairers, contractors and other service providers. Ensure effective communication with internal and external stakeholders. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery. Support the achievement of broader claims and reinsurance objectives. Desired Experience & Qualification Minimum Requirements Grade 12 (National Senior Certificate). Degree in Insurance, Finance, Business or a related field will be advantageous. Short-Term Insurance qualification will be advantageous. Minimum 5 years' experience managing large and complex insurance claims. Proven experience making complex technical claims decisions. Previous experience within a Reinsurance Claims environment is essential. Knowledge & Skills Strong understanding of short-term reinsurance contracts and treaty structures. Sound knowledge of property and motor claims. Financial acumen with experience managing reserves, recoveries and claims reporting. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Excellent negotiation and stakeholder management skills. Ability to build strong relationships with brokers, reinsurers and service providers. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities. Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and claims management systems.
