Data Analyst

SUMMARY:
The Centre for Child and Adolescent Lung Health (CHILD) at the UCT Lung Institute is recruiting a Data Analyst for the Drakenstein Child Health Study (DCHS) for a 12-month contract post, with the possibility of renewal. The incumbent will be based at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and will be responsible for preparing, analyzing and reporting on data related to the primary project outcomes and providing ongoing statistical support to students and investigators.
 
DCHS is a multi-year birth cohort study following 1,000 mother child pairs to investigate the epidemiology, aetiology and risk factors for childhood lower respiratory illness and the impact on child health, including the development of chronic respiratory disease. The study aims to investigate the role and interaction of potential risk factors covering 7 areas (environmental, infectious, nutritional, genetic, psychosocial, maternal and immunological risk factors) that may impact on child health. The cohort has been actively followed for 11 years, with an additional focus on the emergence of non-communicable diseases and mental health as the children reach pre-adolescence. With an extensive publication record, strong international collaborations and novel work in areas which include the childhood microbiome, gene expression, and adolescent TB, the study presents exciting opportunities for analysis and collaboration.

POSITION INFO:
Minimum Requirements:

• Master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, epidemiology or public health (with a strong quantitative focus)

• Minimum of 3 years’ research and statistical analysis experience in analysis of health data
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with psychosocial data
• Demonstrated experience working with longitudinal statistical analysis approaches
• High proficiency in a known statistical package such as R, and ability to code in STATA

• Data management experience with electronic platforms such as REDCap

• Experience working in a collaborative research environment
• Experience with publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP)

• Providing statistical support to investigators and students by running specific analyses - providing support with interpretation of the results and playing an active role in statistical analyses and write-up of manuscripts for peer-review publication
• Advising investigators and students on statistical approaches to research questions – which includes liaising with relevant investigators relating to specific analyses and completing high quality statistical analyses as needed
• Providing support and supervision to Masters and PhD students and data interns – providing support and supervision to student’s research papers (providing statistical analysis support, and overseeing writing of statistical methods, results and interpretation of results)
• Collaborating with external academic groups - relating mainly to psychosocial, genetic and clinical and any added sub-studies, to ensure quality datasets, reports and interaction with Investigators, students and staff
• Compiling datasets as needed for investigators/ students/ collaborators and compiling data sets for uploads to relevant databases
• Automatization of data driven decisions - developing and maintaining programs to streamline and automate repeated data tasks to ensure consistency and quality of outputs, visualisations and high-quality feedback reports
• Data quality control (including input into quality control systems and creating feedback reports) – ensuring clean, readily available data in database for study staff/ investigators/ collaborators to use
• Developing and maintaining REDCap-based databases, and reporting from such databases.

• Working hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
