A Data Manager (Fixed Term Contract) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (RHI) in Hillbrow, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

Background

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.

It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders.

Main purpose of the job

• Ensure that processes for research data management are developed, implemented and monitored to ensure the effective collection, entry, analysis, archiving and storage of research and programmatic data to the highest standards

Key performance areas

• Develop, implement and maintain all data-related SOPs
• Monitor and evaluate the progress of data management for respective projects; compile progress reports as required
• Develop and implement data management work plans
• Oversee the maintenance of participant files and archiving
• Ensure that data management systems comply with GCP and other regulatory requirements
• Provide support and approve the design of databases to ensure that they meet the requirements for entry and reporting of research data
• Raise and resolve data queries with direct reports
• Provide support to relevant project staff and support them in the use of statistical software
• Process and produce accurate data reports within required timeframes
• Produce or support the production of summaries and listings of safety, performance and other outcome data
• Attend to staffing requirements for the data management team
• Supervise and manage the duties of subordinates to ensure optimal staff utilization and support
• Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments
• Identify substandard performance by any team member and take necessary corrective action
• Coach and train subordinates and team members to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills required to successfully perform their duties
• Promote harmony, teamwork, and sharing of information
• Participate in and represent the data management team at meetings as required
• Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
• Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
• Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
• Take ownership for driving your own career development by participating in on-going training and development activities such as forums, conferences, policy setting workshops, etc.
• Participate in strategic decision-making meetings

Required minimum education and training

• Grade 12 (basic numeracy and literacy)
• Valid South African driver’s license (Code 08 or Code 10)

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

• MSc degree in a relevant discipline would be advantageous
• Experience in clinical trial data management
• Experience in working with donor-funded programmes
• Knowledge of HIV/AIDS experience in clinical trial data management
• Experience implementing and managing quality control systems for data
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate complicated situations
• Excellent written and verbal and communication skills
• Knowledge of MySQL, Visual Basic, REDCap will be an advantage
• Self-motivated. Strong attention to detail. Able to meet to deadlines
• Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Required minimum work experience

• Minimum of 5 years experience in working with databases, managing data capturing and/or implementing quality control activities
