POSITION INFO:
Electrical Engineering Superintendent Major Sugar Manufacturing & Cogeneration Operation | Uganda | East Africa Lead Electrical Reliability. Drive Plant Availability. Make an Industrial Impact. An exciting senior engineering opportunity has arisen for an experienced Electrical Engineering Superintendent to join a major, fully integrated sugar manufacturing and agro-industrial operation in Uganda, East Africa . This is a strategically important position for an accomplished electrical engineering professional who thrives in a large-scale, continuous-process manufacturing environment and has a proven track record in electrical maintenance, plant reliability, breakdown management, shutdowns and technical team leadership . The successful candidate will report directly to the Electrical Engineering Manager and will take a hands-on leadership role in ensuring the reliability, availability, safety and performance of the factory's extensive electrical infrastructure. WHY THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY This is far more than a conventional electrical maintenance role. You will be joining a substantial industrial operation where electrical reliability is fundamental to production, plant availability and power generation . The operation incorporates a major bagasse-based cogeneration facility , generating approximately 51 MW of electricity , with surplus power exported to Uganda's national grid. The cogeneration operation is therefore an integral part of the wider industrial process rather than simply a supporting utility. For the right engineering professional, this represents an opportunity to apply advanced electrical maintenance and reliability expertise within a technically demanding sugar manufacturing and renewable-energy environment . THE ROLE As Electrical Engineering Superintendent , you will be responsible for providing strong technical and operational leadership across the electrical maintenance function. Your primary mandate will be to: Keep the factory running. Keep the electrical systems reliable. Reduce downtime. Improve maintenance standards. Develop the team. You will lead electrical maintenance activities across production, utilities, power generation and associated plant infrastructure, working closely with Production, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation, Automation and senior Engineering management. This is a hands-on leadership position for an engineer who is comfortable moving between strategic maintenance planning and the factory floor to diagnose and resolve complex technical problems. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Electrical Maintenance & Reliability Lead day-to-day electrical maintenance activities throughout the manufacturing operation. Drive preventative, predictive and corrective electrical maintenance programmes. Lead the diagnosis and rectification of complex electrical breakdowns. Minimise electrical-related production downtime. Improve equipment reliability and Mean Time Between Failures. Analyse recurring electrical failures and implement permanent corrective actions. Ensure critical electrical equipment is maintained to appropriate engineering standards. Develop maintenance strategies based on equipment criticality and operating conditions. Industrial Electrical Systems Provide technical leadership across: HV \/ MV \/ LV electrical distribution systems. Transformers and substations. Switchgear and protection systems. MCCs and control panels. Motors and motor-control systems. VFDs and soft starters. Generators and alternators. Electrical cabling and distribution networks. Power-factor correction systems. Industrial lighting and emergency power systems. Earthing and lightning protection. Electrical systems supporting boilers, turbines and cogeneration. Process-control and automation interfaces. Breakdown & Fault Finding Lead emergency electrical breakdown response. Diagnose faults quickly and accurately. Coordinate technicians and artisans during critical breakdowns. Work closely with Production and Mechanical teams to restore plant operation. Conduct Root Cause Failure Analysis. Identify chronic equipment failures. Implement engineering modifications to eliminate repeat failures. Shutdowns & Off-Crop Maintenance A major responsibility will be the planning and execution of annual shutdowns and major maintenance campaigns . You will: Develop detailed electrical shutdown plans. Identify critical maintenance activities. Coordinate manpower, contractors, materials and specialist services. Manage electrical inspections, testing, repairs and equipment overhauls. Monitor shutdown progress and critical-path activities. Ensure safe recommissioning of electrical systems. Conduct post-shutdown reviews and implement lessons learned. Power Generation & Cogeneration Provide electrical engineering and maintenance support to the site's significant bagasse-fired cogeneration operation , including generator systems, electrical protection, switchgear, distribution and associated infrastructure. The site generates approximately 51 MW from bagasse and exports surplus electricity to the national grid, making electrical reliability a critical component of the overall operation. Technical Team Leadership Supervise and develop Electrical Technicians, Electricians, Artisans and technical personnel. Allocate daily maintenance activities. Coordinate shift and standby resources. Monitor productivity and quality. Coach and mentor junior engineers and technicians. Identify skills gaps and training requirements. Build a culture of accountability, safety and continuous improvement. Electrical Safety Enforce strict electrical safety standards. Ensure effective Lock-Out \/ Tag-Out procedures. Maintain permit-to-work and isolation standards. Conduct electrical safety inspections. Participate in risk assessments and incident investigations. Ensure electrical work is undertaken by suitably competent personnel.
