Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

SUMMARY:

Our client within the FMCG sector is currently recruiting for an Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist, in the Pretoria Area, to ensure that the plant has effective systems and procedures in place to meet regulatory, public, and global company requirements in all areas. 

POSITION INFO:

Minimum Requirements:

• NQF level 6 with a technical background and EHS courses.
• 5+ year relevant experience in food production industry, with an understanding of production process.
• Knowledge of GMP, HACCP, Food Safety, SOP, Pest control and Bakery operation.
• Good computer knowledge, specifically Excel.
• Proficient in SAP
• Good English communication skills (both written and verbal).

Duties and responsibilities

• Leads the EHS teams onsite to ensure legal and policy compliance in all aspects of EHS.
• Drives the implementation of Global Safety and Sustainability initiatives.
• Establishes, develops and review policies to maintain and manage comprehensive environmental, health and safety services for the facility, safeguarding all personnel and company assets.
• Reports on effectiveness of Plant Safety and Environment procedures and programmes.
• Leads management of employer liability reports and claims for facility, agreeing defence and acceptance of liability through regular review with the applicable insurers
• Prepares sites for the audits, compiles action plans following audit recommendations, and drives the implementation thereof.
• Conducts internal site audits between external audits and Global teams.
• Provides professional leadership to manufacturing and engineering project teams to ensure operational health & safety specifications are in line with latest legislation.
• Co-ordinates the investigation of any Environmental and Safety incidents, accidents, safety hazards or risk and recommends preventative measures to minimise potential risks to both personnel and the Company, thus ensuring that the facility’s safety performance improves continually.
• Proactively investigates best practice in safety systems and makes recommendations which will help the facility achieve more effective operation and achieve cost improvement objectives without compromising the environment.
• Assesses EHS training needs for the facility and liaises with the HR Manager to implement as necessary.
• Initiates, implements, and manages developments to the management systems to drive improvements in line with the facility’s business objectives.
• Develops skills & competencies of function staff to ensure effective contribution to the development of the Company’s business.
• Implements resources optimization and reduction programmes.
• Work with Occupational Medical Practitioners in implementing a proper medical surveillance program and taking remedial actions where needed.
• Leads the Security team to ensure legal and policy compliance in all aspects of security.
• Manages and coordinates the on-site Security Company.
• Develops appropriate security specifications for internal customers and relevant service providers.
• Perform any reasonable tasks given by the Plant Manager.
