HESQ Co-Ordinator
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented HESQ Coordinator to support our site’s Health, Environment, Safety, and Quality systems. The successful candidate will play a key role in contractor onboarding, compliance management, risk control, quality system maintenance, and continuous improvement across the operation. The position will be based at Yara Animal Nutrition South Africa (Pty) Ltd in Durban and report to the HESQ Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Contractor & Employee Onboarding
Manage contractor onboarding and safety file compliance
Conduct safety inductions and annual medical coordination
Facilitate HESQ training including PTW, Risk Assessments, and general inductions
Lead monthly contractor meetings and ensure alignment to site requirements
Safety, Health & Environment
Conduct plant walks, Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) observations, and systematic inspections
Perform risk assessments and support Management of Change processes
Lead incident investigations and ensure follow-up actions are completed
Maintain environmental compliance including permits, licenses, and reporting
Drive HESQ awareness initiatives across the site
Quality & Systems Management
Support internal audits and coordinate external audits (Service Providers, Customers, Regulatory)
Maintain and improve ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 system requirements
Oversee laboratory equipment maintenance schedules
Develop and maintain SOPs / SPLs to support operational excellence
Manage Synergi / YMS reporting and close-outs
Stakeholder Engagement
Liaise with AgriLaSa, contractors, service providers, and internal stakeholders
Prepare committee minutes (Central Committee, Management Review, Emergency Exercises)
Administrative & HR Support
Assist with purchasing (PR generation and follow-ups)
Support HR-related processes such as overtime administration and disciplinary documentation (where required)
Qualifications & Experience
Matric essential
Diploma or Degree in Safety, Environmental, Quality, or related field
Experience in Safety, Environmental, Laboratory, Occupational Health, Process Safety. Additional training on one or more of these fields will be advantageous
Experience working with HESQ systems i.e. ISO45001, ISO14001, ISO9001 and ISO17025
Minimum 5 years’ experience with on-site HESQ management in a chemical manufacturing environment
Understanding legal and other requirements that are related to HESQ i.e. OHSA 85 of 1993 and NEMA 107 of 1998
Advanced computer literacy – Microsoft office (Word & Excel) essential
Strong understanding of HESQ legislation and compliance frameworks
Experience in contractor management and safe systems of work
Training or experience in planning and facilitating internal and external audits
Must have good presentation skills and be confident to present training courses on HESQ topics and facilitate risk assessments or talks
Excellent coordination, communication (English – reading, writing, speaking), and reporting skills.
Supervisory skills or experience in managing employees will be an advantage
