Head of Internal Audit

A leading institution is seeking an experienced Head of Internal Audit to establish, lead, and continuously enhance its Internal Audit function. This strategic leadership role offers direct engagement with Executive Management, the Board, and the Audit & Risk Committee while driving governance, risk management, and internal control effectiveness across the organization. POSITION INFO:
Job Description: Develop and implement a rolling Internal Audit Strategy aligned to organisational objectives Prepare and execute the annual risk-based Internal Audit Plan Lead financial, operational, compliance, governance, and technology-related audit engagements Provide independent assurance over governance, risk management, and internal control effectiveness Build and continuously improve audit methodologies, frameworks, and quality assurance processes Drive the implementation of data analytics and technology-enabled audit practices Report significant risks, control weaknesses, and emerging trends to Executive Management and the Audit & Risk Committee Monitor remediation activities and ensure the closure of audit findings Serve as a trusted advisor to Executive Leadership, the Board, and the Audit & Risk Committee Manage relationships with external auditors, assurance providers, and key stakeholders Lead, develop, and mentor Internal Audit team members. Manage co-sourced service providers, audit resources, and departmental budgets Promote a culture of accountability, risk awareness, and continuous improvement throughout the business Skills & Experience: 8+ years Internal Audit experience. Proven experience in a senior Internal Audit leadership role Strong knowledge of governance, enterprise risk management, and internal control frameworks. Experience presenting audit findings to Audit & Risk Committees, Boards, or equivalent governance forums. Strong understanding of risk-based audit planning, controls testing, and audit execution Solid knowledge of IFRS, financial reporting, and South African regulatory requirements Experience with data analytics, technology-enabled auditing, and fraud risk assessments Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication, and leadership capabilities Multi-site organisation, IT audit, cyber audit, and higher education experience - advantageous Qualification: Bachelor's Degree in Internal Auditing, Accounting, Finance OR Equivalent Relevant postgraduate qualification OR professional designation required CIA or CA(SA) - preferred For more information connect with us on and Register your CV to create a profile and to view all our Financial recruitment vacancies Let us assist you with your career.
