Role: Head of Marketplace Operations
Place of work: Johannesburg office, or remote working.
Travel requirement: National and international travel as needed.

The role of the Head of Marketplace Operations for a B2B Marketplace like our company is
varied, challenging and rewarding. Our company will be the shop front from which large
enterprises across Africa will buy the products and services they need. We will be
working across a broad range of industries, and because we will be addressing all, or
most, of their Indirect Spend, we will need to be experts at sourcing the right
products in each of a wide range of categories for our marketplace.
The role will require deep experience of purchasing and supply chain management
in a wide range of industries, and in-depth knowledge of the industries with which
we work. Some of this knowledge you will already have, and some will need to be
acquired while working with our Buyers and Sellers. You will need to be a fast
learner.
Experience with other digital marketplaces will be a distinct advantage, as will
experience of purchasing for large companies in Africa.
Our company will also be asking for your guidance on selecting priority categories,
managing the on-boarding of sellers onto the platform and how best to
communicate the Company value proposition to sellers.
You will need strong people management skills to recruit and manage a team of
people who will be doing the purchasing on behalf of our clients. You will need to
instill in them the core values of the company to ensure that our customers perceive
us as excellent in our field.
Some of the specific skills which you will require for this job are:
â— Be able to engage with customers (Buyers and Sellers) and clearly articulate
the Company value proposition.
â— Be able to talk the same business language as senior members of a
company's procurement and supply chain people.
â— Have a good understanding of digital marketplaces and how they work, and
the value that they provide to buyers and sellers.
â— Ability to design structures and processes for rapid scaling up of operations.
â— You will need to be self-motivated and driven to achieve success.
â— A start up business is always challenging. You will need the resilience to face
and overcome those challenges.
â— A good communicator both verbally and in writing. Good at listening and
sharing thoughts and ideas.
â— You will need to be flexible working in a business where things are likely to
change at a fast pace. We will try to keep focused and minimised drastic
changes, but be prepared for some agility and be ready to roll your sleeves up
to help us achieve our goals.
â— You will need to be prepared to travel as needed to the countries in Africa
where we need to establish a Procurement Excellence Centre. We will try to
ensure that travel requirements are safe in all respects, including any
pandemic related warnings.
