Main purpose of the job

The purpose of the position of Biobank & Research Laboratory Manager is to:

• Ensure the SBIMB Biobank is maintained and handled under optimal conditions consistent with agreements and collaborators, with best ethical practice and according to international guidelines and protocols
• Ensure that the core laboratory facilities and the Biobank are organized and operated so that they best support the scientific activities of all SBIMB research groups and their collaborators
• Deliver state-of-the-art laboratory support services to different partners (inside and outside SBIMB)
• Ensure adequate maintenance of all the laboratory equipment
• Oversee and contribute to training in areas of expertise within laboratory services and Biobank, including laboratory safety, in cooperation with other SBIMB partners and Wits groups
• Receiving, labelling and analysing samples (blood, buffy coats, etc.)
• Designing and executing laboratory services (DNA extraction) according to standard procedures

Key performance areas

Laboratory Management 

• Manage the implementation and correct application of all policies and procedures, and good clinical and laboratory practice (GCLP) principles, to ensure compliance as required for the Biobanking operations
• Optimize the services includes health and safety, DNA extractions, DNA storage and curation, the shipment of samples and consultation and advice for required documentation for genomics research
• Manage efficiently the resources of the research lab and biobank (personnel, space and finances) including planning in relation to extra-budgetary funds necessary to maintain staff

Laboratory Administration

• Oversee the day-to-day laboratory activities, including the smooth running and operation of essential scientific equipment and the tracking of laboratory equipment maintenance schedules
• Ensure management of lab consumables stock
• Prepare regular QC and progress reports; assist with writing grant proposals

Quality Assurance

• Manage the correct application of quality assurance processes and SOPs and ensure that all operations are fully and correctly documented
• Ensure that all contract and independent research performed by members of the Biobank is performed in a scientifically rigorous and fully documented manner
• Advise and train visitors on the correct use of equipment/Biobank resources to ensure valid results are generated

Research

• Data generation and analysis
• Co-supervise postgraduate students and mentoring intern
• Guide students with experimental work

Required minimum education and training

• MSc Molecular Biology or related biomedical field, preferably PhD

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

• Experience in managing a Molecular/Biomedical research Laboratory, conducting research with publications and knowledge of biobanking
• Great interpersonal and communication skills

Required minimum work experience

• Minimum 5 years’ experience
