Laboratory Technologist

SUMMARY:
The VUKA Research Clinic (www.lunginstitute.co.za), require applications for a LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST* on a Fixed Term Contract.
 
Purpose:
The main purpose of this position is to perform the day-to-day laboratory activities of the Vuka Research Clinic Laboratory. The site conducts clinical research primarily in infectious diseases.
 
Activities include performing protocol required and clinically indicated assays as requested by the clinical team, shipping and tracking specimens, printing and issuing results, filing laboratory and related regulatory documents, quality checks and query resolution of laboratory samples and data submitted. The role also includes stock control and equipment management in conjunction with the Laboratory Manager.
 
This position is based 100% at the Vuka Research Clinic in Khayelitsha.

POSITION INFO:
Minimum Requirements:

• Qualification as a Laboratory Technologist: B. Tech with active HPCSA registration/ B.Sc. Medical Bioscience or equivalent
• One years’ laboratory experience in clinical/ research/ academic.
• Current SA-GCP certificate
• Computer literate
• Meticulous attention to detail
• Good numeracy, literacy and organizational skills
• Ability to follow protocols
• Good interpersonal and time management skills
• Laboratory safety practices
• Confidentiality - will handle confidential participant data

• Operate within the lab according to established safety standards,
• Perform protocol required and clinically indicated tests as requested by clinical team.
• Document and issue results within specific turn-around-time.
• Receive, process, and prepare specimens documenting each step as required.
• Store (per protocol requirements), ship and trace samples sent for assays done at referral laboratories and document each step as required.
• Work according to procedures set out by the Laboratory Manager to:
• Facilitate the maintenance, repair and calibration of equipment,
• Maintain adequate stock of assay kits and laboratory consumables,
• Maintain waste disposal systems for the entire site.
• Work according to procedures set out by the Admin Team to:
• Maintain adequate stock of office consumables used within the laboratory.
• Work according to procedures set out by the Laboratory Manager to:
• Facilitate the maintenance, repair and calibration of equipment,
• Maintain adequate stock of assay kits and laboratory consumables,
• Maintain waste disposal systems for the entire site.
• Work according to procedures set out by the Admin Team to:
• Maintain adequate stock of office consumables used within the laboratory.
• Work according to procedures set out by the Laboratory Manager/ sponsor/ protocol to (data management):
• Complete source documentation and capture data,
• Liaise with study staff, referral labs and sponsors in obtaining results and resolving data queries,
• Address lab data discrepancies raised by the clinic team, sponsor, referral labs etc.
• Partake in site, institutional and sponsor training required for the role
