Lead R&D Engineer

SUMMARY:
A Mining equipment manufacturing company is looking for a Lead R&D Engineer to design and develop trackless mobile equipment for the underground market.

POSITION INFO:

• Generate new and update existing engineering drawings in the form of free hand sketches, hand drawn and CAD system models.
• Check and approve drawings generated or changed by others in the department.
• Complete the documentation and maintain the configuration control of documents and drawings as prescribed in the company standards.
• Be familiar with national and international standards where they affect the company’s products.
• Be familiar with the company’s business systems as they affect engineering matters.
• Calculate cost effects of modifications and design detail changes.
• Perform engineering design calculations of systems, structures, and components.
• Investigate the causes of engineering problems and generate report.
• Use engineering techniques to find solutions and to solve engineering problems.
• Interpret client or user requirement specifications to develop engineering specifications or systems, structures, or components.
• Confirm design specifications with details to assure conformance.
• Be familiar with materials, processes, and heat treatment as they affect the company’s products.
• Liaise with production to ensure most economical methods of manufacture are built into the product at the design and detail stage.
• Plan and control the development and testing of engineering systems, structures, and components.
• Analyse and interpret engineering test data.
• Structure Engineering BOMs and manufacturing BOMs on Windchill.
• Plan and control engineering projects.
• Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective action for reported quality defects.

 

Responsibilities AND Accountabilities

• Generation of 3-D CAD models.
• Electrical and electronic circuit design 24V DC up to 1000V AC.
• Design and draw looms and circuits.
• Responsible for accurate engineering drawing produced by drafting personnel.
• Drive train design.
• Familiar with mechanical structural design and welding processes.
• Familiar with machine and mobile hydraulic systems and processes.
• Operator Ergonomics.
• Evaluation of machine risks and hazards.
• Technical communication via manuals and information bulletins.
• Creation of accurate parts manuals.
• Practical validation of product design.
• Periodic field service and workshop support.
• Electrical and mechanical drawings to conform to national and international standards.

 

Required Work Experience

• 3 – 5 years’ experience in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics Design experience.
• B Eng Mechatronics/B Tech Mechatronics or BSc/B Eng Mechanical/B Tech with strong electronics exp or BSc/B Eng Electrical/Electronics/B Tech Electrical/Electronics with strong mechanical background.
• Experience in Mining Industry equipment advantageous.
• Project management experience.
• The ability to interpret the vision of a client or employer and translate it into a realistic drawing.
• Willing and able to visit and work in a UG environment.
• Not be claustrophobic.
• PTC Creo and Windchill advantageous.
• Syspro advantageous.
• Microsoft Visio advantageous.
• Highly proficient level computer skills including Ms Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
• Programming and changing of FW Murphy controller and system advantageous.
• J1939 can bus protocol.
