SUMMARY:
Key Duties & Responsibilities
A Lighting Specialist in Centurion (or similar) would be expected to cover many of the following:
- Lighting Design & Specification
- Develop lighting layouts, luminance/lux level calculations, photometrics to ensure required lighting levels in spaces.
- Select appropriate luminaires, fixtures, fittings and controls (e.g. dimmers, motion sensors, LED drivers).
- Produce technical drawings / blueprint-overlays / AutoCAD / Revit / Dialux / Relux etc. for lighting.
- Ensure designs comply with South African standards / regulations (electrical, safety, energy efficiency).
- Project Management & Execution
- Handle lighting projects from concept to completion: initial client brief → design → procurement → installation → commissioning.
- Work with contractors / installers / suppliers to ensure correct installation.
- Perform site inspections, check installation quality, ensure safety & correct wiring, lighting angles, connections etc.
- Sales / Client Engagement
- Interact with customers to gather requirements (function, aesthetics, cost, energy usage).
- Present lighting solution proposals, with cost estimates, value engineering where necessary.
- Support tenders or quotes for lighting jobs.
- Technical Support & After-Sales
- Troubleshoot lighting system issues: fixtures, controls, power supply.
- Provide maintenance manuals, handovers to client.
- After installation: ensure lighting levels, colour rendering, controls are working as designed.
- Energy Efficient & Sustainable Practices
- Specify energy-efficient lighting (LED, sensors, daylighting integration).
- Consider lifecycle, maintenance, cost of ownership.
- Possibly assist clients with lighting audits.
- Coordination and Communication
- Work with architects, interior designers, electrical engineers, contractors.
- Coordinate with procurement / vendors for sourcing fixtures, components.
- Manage documentation: technical submittals, bills of quantities, specifications.
- Regulation & Compliance
- Stay up to date with national and municipal electrical codes, safety standards, environmental regulations.
- Acquire permits where needed or ensure project complies.
- R&D / Innovation (if applicable)
- Keeping up with lighting technologies (smart lighting, IoT, new LED tech).
Propose new fixture types, control system upgrades, design trends.
POSITION INFO:
Education
Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Lighting Design, Architectural Engineering or related field. A technical qualification in lighting or illumination (if available).
Experience
3-7 years of experience in lighting design, specification, or technical lighting roles. Experience with industrial/commercial lighting is a plus. Experience with LED lighting, lighting control systems (dimming, sensors).
Software / Technical Tools
Proficiency with lighting design / calculation software (Dialux, Relux, etc.), AutoCAD, Revit (advantageous). Knowledge of photometric data, luminaire technical datasheets.
Regulations & Standards
Good understanding of local SA electrical / lighting codes, safety and environmental standards.
Communication / Client Skills
Strong verbal & written communication, ability to present technical proposals to non-technical clients. Client interaction skills.
Project Management
Ability to manage timelines, budgets, coordinate with multiple stakeholders.
Problem Solving & Analytical Skills
Ability to resolve installation issues, design trade-offs, value engineering, etc.
Other
Valid driver’s license (for site visits), willingness to travel to sites, good attention to detail, ability to work under pressure.
