POSITION INFO:
We are seeking the services of a highly capable Maintenance Fitter. The successful incumbent will be responsible for minimising plant downtime, maximising equipment reliability, and extending the operating life of plant equipment and machinery by executing corrective, preventive, and proactive maintenance activities. The aim of this role is to ensure minimal interruption to production and optimal equipment performance.
Reporting to the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman, the Maintenance Fitter must: • Ensure equipment repairs and scheduled maintenance are conducted safely, timeously, and in compliance with standards. • Minimise operational impact during maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Repairs • Inspect all plant sections and equipment in assigned areas, noting defects for immediate repair or future shutdowns. • Ensure job cards are created for all defects on the CMMS by the Foreman/Planner. • Complete daily reporting of shift problems and required documentation (RCFA page 1, job cards, etc.). • Repair equipment as per job card requests, improvement projects, and maintenance plans. • Respond immediately to breakdowns, restore equipment to working condition, and conduct fault finding to eliminate root causes. • Report all temporary repairs to the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman and ensure follow-up job cards are raised. • Inform plant management of any conditions that may result in downtime and take necessary remedial action.
Workshop & Equipment Care • Maintain workshop machinery to ensure safe and reliable operation (grinders, welding machines, ladders, etc.). • Ensure all maintenance job cards are completed before end of shift and signed off by production. • Assist with developing maintenance plans, risk assessments, work instructions, and audits. • Maintain workshop and assets to a high standard of cleanliness and professionalism.
Compliance & Safety • Represent the company professionally at all times. • Perform duties in accordance with health and safety requirements and company policies. • Participate in daily maintenance morning meetings. • Perform standby duties and overtime as authorised. • Assist with training and development of apprentices.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications • Matric (Grade 12) • Recognised Trade Test: Fitter • Minimum N3 Mechanical Engineering
Skills & Experience • Minimum 5 years’ mechanical and plant maintenance experience • Effective communication skills across all levels • Basic welding skills • Skilled in alignment of rotating elements using a dial gauge • Skilled in fitment of tyre, bibby, spring, spider, and direct couplings • Bearing mounting, removal, and maintenance (including bushings manufacture and fitment) • Lubrication (oils and greases) • Taper key manufacture and fit • Basic hydraulics and pneumatics knowledge • Fitment and alignment of belts (V?pulley, timing) • Fitment and alignment of chain and sprocket systems • Ability to read mechanical component drawings • Marking off according to drawing specifications • Belt splicing and tracking (conveyor belting) • Installation, alignment, and tracking of conveyor roller assemblies • Pipe system installation (threaded pipe systems) • Pump installation and maintenance (peristaltic, mono, diaphragm, centrifugal, submerged, gear pumps) • Valve installation and maintenance (globe, gate, slide, diaphragm, ball, pinch, butterfly valves) • Mixer/agitator maintenance • Bulk material handling (screw conveyors, bucket elevators) • Mechanical cutting machines • Gearbox maintenance (backlash, alignment, floats) • Milling machine experience (vertical spindle centrifugal milling machine) • Exposure to coal and gas boilers (advantageous) • Pulp and paper industry experience (advantageous)
