Reporting to the Lead: Advanced Control, the Mass Balance Engineer is responsible for generating and maintaining an accurate refinery mass balance on a daily and monthly basis. You’ll reconcile process and movement data, ensure model accuracy, and support inventory accounting during month-end cycles.
This position sits at the intersection of engineering, operations, and finance, providing critical data that underpins both operational performance and financial reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
Refinery Daily Mass Balance
- Compile and reconcile the daily refinery mass balance in line with internal standards and procedures.
- Validate oil transfers and movements using PI Process Book and Intelligent Movement Management (IMM).
- Execute daily SigmaFine models and reconcile discrepancies.
- Maintain weekly reconciliation reports and ensure alignment with process engineering balances.
- Monitor and achieve model accuracy targets (≤5% model error).
Month-End Stock Accounting
- Support Finance and Scheduling teams with bulk stock closure and reconciliation.
- Conduct sampling activities (e.g., Karl Fisher tests).
- Run monthly SigmaFine cases to extract closing inventories, densities, and temperatures.
- Publish validated data to PI and SAP HANA via SQL tools.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies between technical and financial inventory records.
Technical & Cross-Functional Support
- Collaborate with Process Engineering, Operations, Schedulers, and Finance to maintain data integrity.
- Support instrumentation and maintenance teams to ensure meter accuracy.
- Drive continuous improvement in data quality, model performance, and reporting standards.
Technical Projects
- Lead and contribute to projects that enhance refinery mass balance and data systems.
Job Experience & Skills Required (Ideal Candidate Profile):
- BTech or BSc Engineering – preferably in Chemical Engineering or Control & Instrumentation.
- 5+ years’ experience in refinery, process, or instrumentation engineering.
Skills & Knowledge
- Solid understanding of refinery mass balance principles and engineering fundamentals.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with proficiency in Excel and SQL.
- Experience with PI (OSIsoft), SigmaFine, and IMM highly advantageous.
- Familiarity with inventory accounting and meter reconciliation.
- Excellent communication and collaboration across technical and commercial teams.
- High attention to detail and data integrity.
- Willingness to work extended hours during month-end or stock closure cycles.
