Mechanical Engineer

SUMMARY:
This large international company requires the expertise of a Mechanical Engineer with a B.Sc / B.Eng or B.Tech qualification with at least 5 to 10 years' experience in project services, including in depth knowledge of mechanical and structural systems. Experience in the water treatment industry would be an advantage.

POSITION INFO:
OVERVIEW:
Execute the Mechanical Engineering Services as required, including design, procurement support,  testing and evaluation and after sales service, within agreed constraints of time, cost and quality  and problem solving at all levels.  Facilitate and execute the basic and detail mechanical engineering design and interface with the Process, EC&I and fabrication I construction functions to execute all projects.

REQUIREMENTS:

• B.Sc I B.Eng I B.Tech Mechanical Engineering Qualification.  
• 5 to 10 Years'' experience in Mechanical Engineering background (Water Treatment industry experience would be an advantage).
• In depth knowledge of mechanical and structural systems is essential (specifically in piping, pumps, skid structure design would be advantageous).
• Experience compiling Datasheets and procedures are essential.
• Computer skills with excellent skills in MS Word and MS Excel.
• Detailed understanding of mechanical components which comprise water, sewage and waste water treatment plant would be advantageous but is not essential.
• ECSA registration would be advantageous.
• Have good communication and organisational skills.
• Organised with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Perform all duties to the latest ISO9001 requirements.

• Ensure total confidentiality of all information, internal and external, pertaining to the business.
• Perform all necessary computer functions.
• Communicate with clients in a professional manner.

• Provide input on mechanical aspects related to tenders and projects, in particular compliance with Client specifications, optimisation of mechanical components offered, compiling RFQs for mechanical scope or work, evaluation of vendor quotes/tenders.
• Responsible for the complete adherence to client specifications in all aspects of the design phase.
• Execution of basic and detail mechanical design in accordance with the agreed project programme.
• Detailed Mechanical design and approval of equipment, vessels, piping, structure etc.
• Assist and/or drive specification of equipment that is mechanically suitable for specific
• process requirements for RFQ purposes
• Assist and/or drive equipment selection that is mechanically suitable for specific process requirements
• Generation of accurate material take-offs (Bill of Materials} for procurement and manufacturing purposes.
• Approval and sign-off of vendor and internal cross-discipline designs.
• Overseeing of vendor and sub-contractor equipment design and fabrication inline with internal or Client specifications.
• Approval and Issue of "Approved for Fabrication "Drawings.
• Site work control and management.
• Assist with the Procurement function-compiling a detailed mechanical scope of supply for mechanical subcontract, technical evaluations, attend and/or lead kick-off meetings with vendors & mechanical subcontractors.
• Evaluation of subcontractor and equipment vendors'' proposals received - technical.
• Mechanical design and/or design supervision of equipment, heat exchanges & vessels.
• Assist the Project Manager with the management of mechanical subcontractors and suppliers to meet deliverables (technical, programme, cost).
• Liaison with the Client and Sub-contractors to ensure functionally, safe installation and maintenance within the project.
• Interface and expediting between Drawing Office, Mechanical Design Engineers, Fabricators and Quality Control.
• Management of the interactive flow of information between Drawing Office, Mechanical Design Engineers and Civil, Structural and Mechanical Sub-Contractors.
• Liaising with supplementary external consultants.
• Execution of Pipe Stress Analysis and pressure vessel design. 
• Selection and design of Piping Supports.
• Compilation and management of as-built documentation.
• Generation and approval of project schedules (i.e., valve, line and equipment list).
• Generation and approval of project data books.
• Compilation and management of plant technical and maintenance manuals.
• Compilation and management of plant installation manuals.
• Site installation and commissioning.
• Undertaking of small projects as required.
• Investigation and co-ordination of corrective measures that may arise on site during construction and warrantee period.

• Assist the Mechanical Engineering Lead with the supervision and required development of the other junior resources in the division.
• Coordinate and prioritise project specific deliverables and monitor and maintain performance.
• Coordinate and manage formal project specific design reviews.

• Assist with design and maintain work procedures.
• Assist with development and maintain standards with respect to quality requirements, eg.  Welding procedures for various materials.
• Be an interface between fabrication/assembly and engineering departments 
• Assist with troubleshooting fabrication/assembly issues that may arise

• Ensure health and safety legislation and contractual obligations pertaining to health & safety are adhered to throughout the project.
• Read and understand the IS09001:2008 manual for the procedures pertaining to the Engineering and Projects Division.
• Generation and completion of QCP/ITP documents
• Perform quality inspection of equipment fabricated and assembled in the workshop
• Perform release inspections for equipment in the workshop and at suppliers as required

• Continuously liaise with the client on all technical or contractual aspects of the project
• Interact with partners or suppliers.  
• Attend all training seminars pertaining to this position.
• Perform any other duties required by the designated departmental manager or Project Manager.
