Mechatronics Engineer Intern

SUMMARY:
A leading manufacturing company within the packaging industry is seeking a Mechatronics Engineer Intern to join their Engineering Department. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or junior engineer with 1–2 years’ experience who is passionate about automation, industrial systems, PLC programming, and smart manufacturing technologies.
The successful candidate will work within a cross-functional, project-driven environment focusing on automation, production optimisation, digital systems, and machine upgrades in a high-performance manufacturing setting.

Requirements:

• Grade 12 (Matric)
• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechatronics Engineering (preferred)
• Engineering degree in related discipline (Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering) will be considered with strong cross-disciplinary capability
• Diploma in Mechatronics considered for candidates with exceptional technical ability and proven project experience
• 1–2 years’ relevant experience in manufacturing, automation or industrial environments
• Strong understanding of:
  
  • Engineering drawings and schematics
  • Fault finding and equipment testing
  • PLC/HMI systems
  • Automation and control systems
  • Mechanical and electrical installations
• Exposure to:
  
  • Motion control systems
  • Vision systems
  • SCADA systems
  • Data integration and analytics
• Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and safe working procedures
• Understanding of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Detail-oriented with strong project management capability
• Passion for automation, packaging innovation and sustainable manufacturing

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver engineering projects from concept through to implementation
• Develop and integrate automation systems (PLC, HMI, motion control, vision systems, SCADA, server-side and front-end systems)
• Support machine builds, upgrades and installations (electrical, mechanical and controls)
• Implement engineering standards, documentation and equipment data models
• Deliver reliability and predictive maintenance projects
• Troubleshoot complex manufacturing and automation issues and implement long-term solutions
• Maintain accurate project documentation, technical reports and engineering records
• Ensure compliance with Health & Safety standards and company policies
• Maintain GMP and Food Safety Management System (FSMS) requirements
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, production and other departments
• Continuously improve technical knowledge and stay up to date with automation and Industry 4.0 technologies
