JOB SUMMARY:
Principal Control & Instrumentation Engineer (Contract) with extensive experience for the Mining and Minerals Division

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Job Objective:
  • To function as a Lead Control & Instrument Engineer to coordinate and supervise engineering and design functions within the feasibility or execution environment of a study or project.
  • To function as a Principal Engineer and support the engineering department manager (Head of Discipline) with the management of the Control & Instrumentation department.
  • To ensure that Control & Instrumentation design is executed in accordance with the defined project or study requirements and company objectives and are produced in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • To manage the delivery of best practice Control & Instrumentation design principles and methodologies and associated deliverables in alignment with company organisational objectives and client requirements.
  • To be primarily accountable for definition of, custodianship, and management of technology applicable to the different areas Control and Instrumentation Engineering.
  • To ensure all Control & Instrumentation work and activities are conducted in a safe manner, complying with and actively contributing to the company Health, Safety and Environmental HSE policies, manuals and procedures, at all times considering the health, safety and welfare of fellow workers, visitors, clients, community and the environment.
  • Ensure that the technical quality of work produced is in accordance with safety and operational requirements and complies with the latest international and local standards, Regulations and Acts and meets project and Client standards.
  • To ensure accuracy and completeness of the technical content of calculations, specifications, and reports by means of defined review processes.
  • To produce consistent performance against schedules, i.e., the ability to prioritise and produce one’s own work in a timely manner to assist other engineering functions to complete on time.
  • To develop a thorough knowledge of company measurement and control system design procedures, the design process, design systems available, engineering standards and effect of design process on project process.
  • To provide input to facilitate and ensure Mineral Processing Plant constructability and commissioning ease.
  • To acquire and make use of effective communication and delegation skills.
  • To actively pursue excellent Health, Safety and Environmental performance standards and to encourage all staff to achieve or outperform the indicated HSE KPI’s of company PLC
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
 
Project Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the Control & Instrumentation Engineering effort within a project team to meet the project schedule and budget objectives.
  • Assist the discipline or project engineering manager with accurate forecasting of discipline manpower.
  • Manage, convene and facilitate the definition for Control & Instrumentation user requirements or Required Operational Capabilities for Control & Information systems.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, contract specifications, control and network system architectures, calculations, reports, design criterion, tender documentation, installation contract documentation and other C&I documents required by the project or study in accordance with project, discipline, statutory regulations, good practice and company procedural requirements.
  • Ensure that an appropriate project filing system is maintained and kept and kept up to date in a discipline or project system which all design personnel utilise.
  • Ensure that the designs produced support the required method of construction and ease of plant maintenance and operations.
  • Ensure that appropriate design engineering standards are defined, maintained and adhered to on all projects.
  • Provide guidance to client, project engineers, other specialist engineers and inspectors on Control & Instrumentation engineering matters.
  • Review Control & Instrumentation aspects of vendor package unit supplier’s design as requested by the engineer responsible for the equipment.
  • Notify the Project Engineering Manager or Project Engineer of all deficiencies in the flow of data or other basic information required for execution of work.
  • Attend coordination meetings and engineering design review meetings with equipment and vendor package suppliers as required.
  • Review and ensure inclusion of Control & Instrumentation requirements on project P&ID’s utilizing ISA or other applicable standards and symbology.
  • Assume responsibility for all Control & Instrumentation engineering and design content, such as but not limited to calculations, discipline design drawings and technical documents within a project or study.
  • Review and comment on engineering and design deliverables from the Control & Instrumentation discipline as well as from other engineering disciplines.
  • Produce designs in accordance with project, discipline, statutory regulations, good practice and company procedural requirements.
  • Review equipment supply & installation contractors and produce technical adjudications / recommendations.
  • Review vendor documentation for compliance with project / study specifications.
  • Compare procurement costs against budget and provide feedback to estimating.
  • Monitor project engineering development for estimate, control and review of costs related to design scope changes.
  • Provide feedback on the quality, use and value of design systems used in design processes.
  • Attend factory acceptance tests and provide input to vendor’s test documentation.
  • Produce site inspections, functionality testing and commissioning reporting documentation.
  • Assist with plant Control & Instrumentation equipment and system installation and commissioning.
  • Prepare project close out reports with comparisons of design and procurement engineering man hour budgets in relation to project actual man hours.
  • Liaise with the client to ensure that agreed designs are in accordance with agreed requirements.
  • Respond to and resolve technical queries from projects, client, and site.
  • Conduct regular design group meetings within a departmental, project or study context.
  • Allocate work and provide assistance to Control & Instrumentation discipline engineers and designers on projects / studies.
  • Work closely with other consultants and other disciplines and Project / Study Managers to ensure that the client’s objectives are met in a timely manner.
  • Provide input to various progress and status reports, including listing achievements and highlighting issues as required 
Departmental Responsibilities: 
  • To stand in for or act as interim Department Manager as required.
  • Provide input to proposals and manhour estimates for all Control & Instrumentation deliverables and activities.
  • To keep abreast of development and change in the Control & Instrument engineering technology areas.
  • To assist the Department Manager with the day-to-day management of the Control & Instrumentation department, as required.
  • To participate in the development of departmental framework documents.
  • To provided technical guidance and best practice inputs to the rest of the Control & Instrumentation Engineering team.
  • To co-ordinate with the functional manager to develop and update the discipline technical quality assurance checklists and processes where applicable.
  • To coordinate and conduct technical audits or peer reviews of the Control and Instrumentation discipline on projects.
  • To provide mentorship to younger engineers in order to develop the required skillsets and experience.
  • Actively support recruitment, selection, development, performance measurement and management, transfers, and promotion of resources to meet succession and business plans.
  • Supports the development and retention of motivated and competent people.
Qualifications:
  • BSc, BEng or B.Tech in Engineering or National Diploma (or equivalent) with a minimum of 10 years’ experience.
 Desirable:
  • ECSA registered as a Professional Engineer or Technologist
  • Be regarded as an industry expert in Control & Instrumentation Engineering
Knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years Control & Instrumentation design experience in the mining and minerals processing industry.
  • Site field engineering experience – construction and commissioning.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver oral and written presentations for study and project reports and proposals
  • An understanding of organisational strategy and change management and an ability to participate in these processes
  • Ability to define and communicate Control and Instrumentation Systems functional and user requirements to other members of the study, project or proposal team.
  • Well-developed computer skills and knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, data centric design and in-house engineering design applications.
  • Working knowledge of MS office software products
