Researcher (12 Months Contract) - Antiviral Gene Therapy Research Unit (Wits)

Main purpose of the job:

• Design and implement research project aimed at the development of mRNA vaccine technologies

Location:

• University of the Witswatersrand, Medical School - Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Experience in molecular biology techniques including DNA and RNA manipulation, quantitative and qualitative assessment of DNA, RNA, and protein (PCR, ELISA, microscopy, electrophoresis, flow cytometry), and cell/tissue culture techniques
• Maintain accurate records of daily research activities
• Carry out analysis of research data and prepare reports of results
• Provide continuous feedback about the status of the research project(s) involved in
• Set up standard operating procedures (develop procedures and write up necessary documentation)
• Provide training to partners and postgraduate students (Honours, Masters, Doctoral)

Required minimum education and training:

• PhD in Molecular Biology

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum 5 years experience in an academic or industry research laboratory
• Good academic track record (conference proceedings and research publications)

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• A goal-oriented individual interested in pursuing academic research
• Membership of the South African Veterinary Council to practice veterinary and para-veterinary procedures
• Good project management skills showing the ability to work in an organized, systematic and meticulous manner
• The ability to troubleshoot and overcome any hurdles experienced during the course of the research activities
• Excellent writing and presentation skills
• The ability to work well under pressure
• Willingness to learn new ideas and implement
• Professional manner in the work environment
• A self-motivated individual capable of focussing on the goal of the research project
