POSITION INFO:

This role places you at the heart of a major operational transformation—leading change where it matters most.
We are seeking Senior Consultants – Shaft Lead to spearhead transformation across underground shaft operations. You will lead structured management systems, enhance safety culture, integrate contractor performance, and help build the foundation for future production ramp-up.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the Transformation:
- Drive the implementation of a comprehensive target attainment plan for an assigned shaft
- Establish and run a shaft war room for real-time performance management
- Integrate bottom-up safety programmes into daily operations
- Coordinate improvement initiatives across mining and engineering teams
- Build Robust Management Systems:
- Co-design and implement structured leadership routines and shaft management practices
- Establish visual management tools and shift management books
- Develop meeting agendas, structured communications, and operational protocols
- Support the optimisation of organisational structures and operating models
- Strengthen Contractor Integration:
- Align contractor teams with the required safety systems, routines, and performance standards
- Ensure seamless operational integration between contractors and mining teams
- Facilitate contractor involvement in transformation initiatives
- Monitor and improve contractor KPIs
- Drive Performance & Safety Excellence:
- Improve production, development, grade control, and equipment availability
- Integrate SLAMs, PTOs, VFLs, and safety coaching into operational routines
- Foster continuous improvement and self-driven operational behaviours
- Baseline current performance and set strengthened targets
- Collaborate Across Stakeholders:
- Work closely with shaft management, mining operations, engineering, and key support services
- Coordinate with broader management teams and functional areas
- Provide clear progress reporting to leadership and steering committees
- Coach and uplift frontline leaders and supervisors
Job Experience & Skills Required (Ideal Candidate Profile):- Essential Experience:
- 10+ years in mining operations, with at least 5 years in underground mining
- Successful experience leading operational transformation or performance improvement programmes
- Strong understanding of underground production, development, and support systems
- Experience implementing structured management routines and performance systems
- Proven safety leadership experience and understanding of safety culture development
- Experience working with contractor/Business Partner operating models
- Ability to drive change across complex, multi-stakeholder environments
- Highly Advantageous:
- Experience in African or copper mining environments
- Familiarity with underground methods such as room-and-pillar
- Experience in ramp-up, turnaround, or recovery operations
- Certification in Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies
- Experience working directly with contractor-led operational models
- Qualifications:
- Degree in Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
- Mine Manager’s Certificate or senior mining qualification
- Safety Leadership Certification
