POSITION INFO:
We're Hiring: Senior \/ Craft Specialist XR Developer (Project Contract) Looking for an experienced Senior \/ Craft Specialist XR Developer to join our XR Development team and play a key technical role in the development of immersive VR\/XR training experiences, simulators and interactive technology solutions. This is not simply a Unity development role. We're looking for someone who can operate confidently across XR development, system architecture, optimisation, interaction design, technical problem-solving and hardware\/software integration --- while also helping strengthen the technical capability of the wider XR team. You'll work within multidisciplinary project teams alongside XR Developers, 3D Artists, Animators, Learning specialists, QA, Delivery Leads and our simulator\/hardware resources. At this level, we need someone who can take on complex technical challenges, help establish the right technical approach for projects, support and mentor developing XR Developers and contribute to the continued evolution of TBR's XR frameworks, tools and development practices. This reflects the Craft Specialist framework's emphasis on advanced implementation, specialist problem-solving, mentorship, framework maturity and operational technical leadership. What you'll be responsible for Developing advanced VR\/XR applications and immersive training experiences in Unity. Translating project and client requirements into appropriate technical requirements, use cases and interaction solutions. Supporting the technical setup and initialisation of XR projects, including selecting appropriate development tools, frameworks, SDKs and technologies. Configuring and maintaining development environments, repositories, XR SDKs and build pipelines. Conducting technical feasibility assessments and proof-of-concepts for new functionality, technologies and integrations. Designing and developing immersive XR interactions, object behaviours, physics-based interactions, UI\/UX systems and multimodal feedback. Creating intuitive and comfortable XR experiences that consider usability, accessibility, ergonomics and motion comfort. Profiling and optimising applications across CPU, GPU, memory, assets, shaders, textures and runtime performance. Optimising code for maintainability, scalability and performance. Maintaining strong coding standards, architectural consistency, documentation and version-control discipline. Integrating and maintaining VR\/AR SDKs and platform technologies. Contributing to the maintenance and improvement of TBR's shared XR frameworks, reusable systems, project templates and development pipelines. Diagnosing and resolving complex runtime, integration and performance issues. Supporting reliable deployment across VR headsets, desktop environments and other target platforms. Working closely with Delivery Leads to identify technical dependencies, risks, resource requirements and implementation considerations. Providing technical input into project scoping, feasibility, solution architecture and implementation planning. Supporting quotations, proposals, demonstrations and technical costing where specialist input is required. Reviewing code and providing technical guidance to other XR Developers. Mentoring and supporting developing team members through practical guidance, knowledge sharing and problem-solving. Contributing to technical workshops, documentation, best practices and the ongoing development of TBR's XR capability. Researching emerging XR technologies, APIs, AI integrations and other technologies that could strengthen TBR's solutions. Supporting prototypes and experimentation with new technologies, tools, workflows and scalable XR product opportunities. What we're looking for Must have: Strong professional experience in Unity development within VR, XR, game development, simulation or another interactive real-time environment. Advanced working knowledge of C# and object-oriented programming. Strong understanding of software architecture, reusable code, maintainability and scalable development practices. Practical experience developing VR\/XR applications for commercial, training, simulation or comparable environments. Strong experience with Unity XR development tools and SDKs. Experience implementing complex XR interactions, object behaviours, physics and UI systems. Strong understanding of XR UX, usability and interaction principles. Experience profiling and optimising Unity applications for CPU, GPU and memory performance. Strong debugging and technical problem-solving ability. Experience integrating and managing SDKs, libraries, plug-ins and project dependencies. Strong Git\/version-control discipline, including branching and merging practices. Experience working with structured development environments and reusable frameworks. Ability to independently investigate and resolve complex technical issues. Experience working collaboratively across multidisciplinary development and production teams. Ability to provide code reviews, technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced developers. Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical considerations to both technical and non-technical project stakeholders. Ability to take technical responsibility for assigned areas of complex XR projects. Advantageous \/ Bonus Skills Strong experience with OpenXR, XR Interaction Toolkit and\/or other major XR SDKs. Experience developing for Meta Quest, Pico and other VR\/XR hardware platforms. Experience with VR\/XR training simulators or industrial simulation environments. Experience integrating software with physical simulator controls and hardware. Working knowledge of Arduino, Raspberry Pi or embedded\/controller systems. Experience integrating custom switches, pedals, sensors, controllers or other physical inputs with Unity. Experience with serial communication, middleware, Node.js or hardware\/software communication interfaces. Basic understanding or experience with PLC-controlled systems and industrial interfaces. Understanding of simulator motion platforms, motion cueing, emergency stops and safety interlocks. Practical electrical\/wiring understanding relevant to simulator integration. Experience with CI\/CD and automated build pipelines. Experience with AI integrations, automation tools, chatbots or emerging interactive technologies. Experience developing prototypes or technical proof-of-concepts. Experience contributing to technical scoping, solution architecture, quotations or proposals. Experience helping establish or improve development frameworks, standards, reusable systems or technical pipelines. Experience leading technical workshops or mentoring other developers. The person we're looking for We're not looking for someone who already knows everything. We're looking for someone who has a solid development foundation, genuine technical curiosity and the drive to keep improving. You should enjoy figuring out: We're looking for someone who has moved beyond simply asking: \"How do I build this feature?\" At this level, we want someone who also asks: What is the best technical approach for this project? Will this architecture still work when the solution becomes more complex? Where is the performance bottleneck and how do we fix it properly? Should this become part of our reusable XR framework rather than solving it only for this project? How should the software communicate with the simulator hardware? What technical risks do we need to identify before they become delivery problems? How can I help another developer solve this problem rather than simply solving it for them? You should still love building things. This is a hands-on technical role. But we're looking for someone whose value extends beyond their own code --- someone whose experience improves the technical quality, consistency and capability of the team around them. You should be comfortable working independently on complex development challenges, collaborating closely with Delivery Leads and other craft specialists, supporting less experienced developers and providing technically informed input when TBR is designing new solutions. You'll also have the opportunity to work beyond conventional VR development, with exposure to simulators, physical controls, motion platforms, embedded technologies, industrial environments, AI and emerging interactive technologies. If you're an experienced XR Developer who wants to remain deeply hands-on while taking the next step into technical specialisation, mentorship and craft leadership, we'd love to hear from you.
