SUMMARY:

SENIOR MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER (Permanent) – Pyrometallurgy Experience

POSITION INFO:

PURPOSE OF ROLE:

• Develop a conceptual and detailed design of engineered components for furnaces and related equipment using modern engineering tools, according to the contract, the safety rules and the time schedule.
• Responsible for the execution of engineering on projects, ensuring that all the calculations, drawings and technical documents are complete and issued in time, by involving the relevant expertise inside the Company. Ensure the continuous improvement and innovation of designs, systems and procedures for operational functions.
• Provide input into manufacturing and commissioning of designed equipment remotely or on site.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

• Take ownership of large and complicated design packages and produce complete and correct designs with minimal assistance from colleagues, from concept to commissioning.
• Assist in preparing all contract deliverables on a project (i.e. drawings, manuals, reports and specifications for manufacturing, installation, procurement and operations).
• Ensure designs are technically acceptable, safe, time and within budget.
• Report changes and delays on the project early and pro-actively.
• Drive value engineered solutions
• Lead design reviews relating to equipment package designs
• Ensure designs conform to the logistics strategy of the project.
• Work closely with the relevant drawing office employees to produce accurate  drawings
• Work closely other disciplines such as Process, Electrical, Control and Instrumentation, to produce accurate and holistically acceptable designs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

• Mechanical Engineering Degree ( B Eng or B Tech)
• ECSA Pr Eng (Advantageous)
• Minimum 5 yrs experience in a furnace/smelting environment (Design or Operational)
• SAF/DC Furnace design advantageous
• Good technical knowledge and understanding Mechanical/Electrical engineering principles
• Drawing packages (AutoCAD/Inventor/Vault/Navisworks) advantageous
• Basic computer literacy ( Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams)
• Knowledge of FEA and CFD modelling principles, capabilities and limitations will be advantageous
• Working knowledge of:
  • HAZOP principles
  • Plant process flow diagrams
  • One or multiple of the following: heat transfer principles, gas handling/design principles, material handling design principles, basic strength of material principles, mechanical manufacturing techniques and processes.
  • Plant commissioning
