Senior Medical Scientist (Research & Development) 2 Year FTC (Wits Diagnostic Innovation Hub) Wits DIH

Main purpose of the job:

• The role of clinical laboratory diagnostics has reached a turning point, largely brought about by COVID19, in that technologies are becoming highly centralized for ultra-high throughput testing with fast result return, or technologies based at the point of care (POCT)
• Through funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, our group is investigating innovations in both testing spectrums across critical pathology analytes and disease spectrums
• These innovations could include alternative specimen collection devices, POC devices, molecular technologies, and highly specialized technologies such as mass spectrometry
• We are looking for a senior medical scientist who is familiar with medical device evaluation across this spectrum, comparative laboratory reference testing, including clinical trial workflow, and who can identify the next innovation in the pathology value chain to improve patient care

Location:

• Wits Diagnostic Innovation Hub
• 3rd floor, Spencer Lister Building, Braamfontein Corner De Korte and Hospital Streets, Braamfontein, Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Develop evaluation protocols for a range of innovative technologies
• Ensure all ethical, legal, and scientific frameworks are in place prior to evaluation
• Conduct evaluations against reference testing in intended clinical settings
• Engage with developers, innovators, and funders
• Work in a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, pathologists, data scientists, biomedical/mechatronic engineers, implementation scientists
• Manage laboratory oversight and quality
• Perform laboratory research and development
• Perform data analysis and compile results reports
• Write and present scientific reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals and abstract-driven conferences

Required minimum education and training:

• MSc in the relevant scientific field and minimum of 5 years of relevant working experience

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum of 5 years working experience post qualification

Professional body registration:

• HPCSA registration is necessary

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Ability to problem solve in clinical diagnostics with an analytical mindset
• Laboratory experience focused on global health priority diseases
• Experience in project management and translational science (putting science into action)
• Experience in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice and infection control
• Experience in presentation at scientific forums and good publication record
• Must be able to translate technical information to non-scientific team members
• Ability to travel to clinical sites and collaborating sites internationally
• A good understanding of statistical programs such as Stata/SAS is an advantage
