Senior Medical Technologist (2 Year Contract) Wits CLS

Main purpose of the job:

• To analyze, interpret and produce participant results from human specimens and to implement and maintain the quality management system for the laboratory

Location:

• CLS, Braamfontein - Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

Analyze, interpret and produce participant results -:

• Receive labeled and captured samples from Data Capturer
• Check and verify that details on tubes and labels correspond
• Check the suitability of samples to be analyzed no clots, not haemolysed
• Check the tests required and log them on the worksheet
• Perform instrument and manual tests
• Analyze and interpret the results
• Re-run tests as and when required
• Follow up on incomplete tests and ensure completion thereof
• Capture manual test results on laboratory information system (MEDITECH)
• Print the test results and correlate data with the MEDITECH system
• Initial printout and file it according to SOP
• Contact relevant Clinicians (by telephone) if abnormal results have been produced
• Record that feedback was given to the relevant Clinician's client
• Store samples as per SOP

Quality assurance and control -:

• Monitor professional body registrations and CPD
• Provide training to staff on documented SOPs, policies, and procedures
• Applies and interprets results of IQA and EQA, reports quality-related issues
• Attempts to resolve all issues and report to manager
• Perform internal and external quality control in conjunction with colleagues
• Report all non-conformances within the QMS to management
• Conform to accreditation requirements
• Conduct maintenance and calibration of equipment
• Review and implement changes to SOPs in order to ensure the laboratory is constantly able to provide high-quality, cost-effective, and correct results
• Perform method validation, the establishment of new assays

Receiving and processing of samples (When required) -:

• Assist in receiving, when necessary, verify if the information on the sample is as the laboratory requisition form (LRF)
• Decide following the SOP whether the sample is suitable for analysis and processing
• Analysis of samples

Required minimum education and training:

• National Diploma in Medical Technology

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum (5) years experience as a Medical Technologist

Professional body registration:

• Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Certification in good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP) and basic health and safety
• Attendance of CEU courses
• Exceptional organizational and administration skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and laboratory systems (Meditech)
• Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
• Assertive and confident. Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Communicate effectively with all laboratory staff
• Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with external laboratories, Clinicians, Couriers, Medical Representatives, equipment suppliers, and Technicians
