SUMMARY:
Job Purpose
The Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, and oversight of structural engineering works for mining and construction projects. The role ensures that all structural systems (steel, concrete, and composite structures) are safe, cost-effective, compliant with South African regulations, and aligned with project requirements. The incumbent provides technical leadership, manages engineering teams, and supports project delivery from concept through to completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Structural Design & Engineering
Lead the design and analysis of structural systems for mining infrastructure and construction projects.
Prepare structural calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
Design structures such as:
Mining plant structures
Conveyor support structures
Crusher foundations
Workshops and industrial buildings
Bridges and heavy-duty platforms
Reinforced concrete and steel structures
Ensure designs meet safety, performance, and regulatory requirements.
- Project Management & Coordination
Manage structural engineering components of projects from feasibility to commissioning.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, mechanical, electrical, and geotechnical engineers.
Provide technical input for project planning, budgeting, and scheduling.
Review and approve engineering deliverables and contractor designs.
- Site Support & Quality Assurance
Conduct site inspections and structural assessments.
Provide technical support during construction and installation.
Ensure compliance with design specifications and quality standards.
Address site engineering challenges and recommend practical solutions.
- Regulatory Compliance
Ensure compliance with South African engineering codes and standards, including:
SANS codes
Mine Health and Safety Act
Occupational Health and Safety Act
Ensure adherence to environmental and safety regulations.
- Leadership & Mentorship
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
Review engineering calculations and designs completed by team members.
Promote best engineering practices and continuous improvement.
- Client & Stakeholder Engagement
Liaise with clients, contractors, and consultants.
Participate in technical meetings and project reviews.
Provide engineering expertise during tender preparation and proposals.
Minimum RequirementsEducationBachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (Structural) or equivalent.
Professional RegistrationRegistration with
ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) as a
Professional Engineer (PrEng) or
Professional Engineering Technologist (PrTech Eng) preferred.
ExperienceMinimum
8–12 years structural engineering experience.
At least
5 years in mining or heavy industrial construction projects.
Technical SkillsStructural design of
steel and reinforced concrete structures.
Experience with
mining infrastructure design.
Knowledge of
finite element analysis and structural modelling software such as:
Prokon
SAP2000
STAAD Pro
Tekla Structural Designer
Proficiency in
AutoCAD and structural detailing software.
Knowledge of
South African building codes and standards (SANS).
