TECHNICAL MANAGER – PROTECTIVE COATINGS

SUMMARY:
The Technical Manager is ultimately responsible for the quality, performance and integrity of all products (raw materials and finished products) and manufacturing processes

POSITION INFO:

Duties:

• Ensure adequate Quality Control measures are in place for all products and processes
• Set and maintain standards and specifications for all products
• Develop new products when required
• Migrate these new products from lab to pilot and then to full production
• Establish and maintain the colour database as well as broadening the tinting capabilities, specifically the export market
• Value Engineering on specific products
• Manage R&D and QC personnel
• Maintain safety standards in the lab, taking into account personnel, equipment, products for consumers
• Optimise current production processes
• Review and update Standard Operating Procedures
• Oversee manufacture of sensitive products
• Manage raw material changes and substitutions
• Load and authorise new formulations into MRP system
• Manage BOM changes at month end
• Analyse and report on QC and Yield variance accounts monthly
• Continue with implementation of internal QMS
• Upskill production and lab staff through internal training in accordance with QMS
• Be responsible for Compuchem and Hibiscus software
• Maintenance of all TDS and SDS
• Stay up to date on and implement all REACH, GHS, CLP, UN, IMO, TSCA and associated regulations
• Provide training on products to local customers
• Provide onsite support to retail sales team
• Provide off site support to industrial sales team when necessary
• Provide Technical support to export customers (specific applications, competitor analysis, product suitability, etc)
• Facilitate external testing of products when required
• Deal with non-conformances and customer complaints
• Keep control of COA’s, COC’s, COO’s and other administrative functions as per export customer requirements
• Lead raw material selection, approval and procurement
• Maintain an approved database of key raw material substitutes
• Assist with reducing the waste stream, e.g. recycling of used solvents, determining work away routes for out of spec products or over yields, etc
• Attend weekly Management Meetings to report on and discuss plant, product, material, process, customer, employee and production topics.

Qualifications and experience:

Chemical and Quality Management qualifications

At least 8 years previous Technical Management experience

Previous technical / quality experience gained in the protective coating or similar industry

Being fully computer literate with good working knowledge of the Microsoft and Compuchem

Good interpersonal skills with a firm disposition.

Self- motivated with good communication and team working skills
