Tailings Dam Engineer

A leading mining and geotechnical engineering environment is seeking an experienced Tailings Dam Engineer to support the design, assessment, and management of tailings storage facilities across major mining operations. This role offers exposure to technically complex, safety-critical projects within the mining sector.

Job & Company Description:

The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, operation, monitoring, and compliance of tailings storage facilities (TSFs). You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and mining stakeholders, ensuring adherence to international best practices, regulatory requirements, and dam safety guidelines throughout the life cycle of tailings facilities.

Education:

• BEng / BSc in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering
• Professional registration with ECSA or progression toward Pr.Eng (advantageous)

Job Experience & Skills Required:

• 3–8 years’ experience in tailings dam or geotechnical engineering
• Proven exposure to tailings storage facility design and management
• Strong understanding of ANCOLD, GISTM, and relevant dam safety guidelines
• Experience with stability analysis and geotechnical design methods
• Ability to interpret laboratory and field investigation data
• Familiarity with slope stability and numerical modelling software (advantageous)
• Strong technical reporting and stakeholder communication skills

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and evaluate tailings storage facilities, embankments, and containment systems
• Conduct stability analyses and risk assessments for existing and proposed TSFs
• Support construction, operation, and closure planning of tailings facilities
• Ensure compliance with regulatory, environmental, and international tailings standards
• Participate in dam safety inspections, audits, and monitoring reviews
• Prepare technical reports, design documentation, and compliance submissions
• Provide technical guidance to site teams and clients on tailings-related matters
