POSITION INFO:
Purpose of the Role
To provide operational support and perform basic maintenance on key utility systems – including compressed air systems, industrial steam boilers, chilled water systems, and general utility services – to ensure safe, continuous, and efficient functioning of the plant’s infrastructure in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and other applicable South African regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Daily Operation & Monitoring:
- Operate and monitor compressor units, steam boilers, water pumps, air dryers, HVAC systems, and cooling towers.
- Conduct hourly and daily checks, and record critical parameters (e.g. pressure, temperature, oil levels).
- Log all operational data in checklists and plant logbooks.
- Preventative Maintenance Support:
- Carry out routine tasks such as filter changes, draining condensate, belt inspections, oil top-up, etc.
- Assist qualified artisans during scheduled maintenance and shutdowns.
- Fault Reporting & Support:
- Identify and report anomalies (e.g. abnormal sounds, pressure drops, overheating) immediately.
- Work closely with the Maintenance and Electrical teams during breakdowns or emergency repairs.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure all work is performed in line with OHSA, SANS standards, and SABS approved safety protocols.
- Support adherence to Department of Labour requirements for pressure vessel and boiler operation.
- Water Quality and Fuel Management:
- Assist with checking boiler feedwater quality (pH, TDS, hardness).
- Monitor diesel/oil/fuel levels for generator or boiler operations.
- General Housekeeping:
- Keep utility areas clean and free from obstructions.
- Maintain clear access to emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and panels.
Preferred Requirements:
- Educational Qualification:
- Grade 12 (Matric) with Maths & Science, and
- N3 / N4 Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
- Alternatively: National Certificate (NQF Level 4) in Boiler Operation or Plant Maintenance
- Work Experience:
- 2 to 4 years’ experience in utilities or maintenance within a manufacturing or FMCG environment
- Hands-on experience with boiler operations, compressors, and cooling systems is required
- Certification:
- Valid Boiler Operator Certificate (if operating high-pressure steam systems)
- Basic First Aid / Fire Fighting Certificate (advantageous)
- Valid SA ID or Work Permit (if not a citizen)
Key Competencies:
- Knowledge of compressor controls, steam generation systems, and utility networks
- Basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting
- Understanding of SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality) procedures
- Physically fit and willing to work in hot/noisy environments
- Willingness to work rotational shifts, weekends or public holidays if required
