Diesel Mechanic Jobs
When you take on the role of a diesel mechanic, you will be spending your time at work maintaining and repairing machinery that typically runs on diesel fuel.
Which duties does a diesel mechanic generally take on?
Your duties, according to Autotraining.edu, include the full range of:
- diagnosing any issues under the hood of the vehicles that come into your workshop, by utilising scanning tools and diagnostic software;
- inspecting the vital systems of these vehicles, across everything from suspension, steering, and brakes, to exhaust systems and emissions;
- carrying out in-depth repairs, as these are needed, to overhaul engines, replace transmissions, and/or swop out damaged parts;
- performing all preventative maintenance procedures that are required, such as oil changes, brake checks, wheel alignments, tyre rotations, and fluid flushes.
What are the ideal qualities of a wanna-be diesel mechanic?
To prove an asset to your service centre team, it’s important to be knowledgeable, a problem solver, a clear communicator, and tech-savvy to a higher than average degree.
What qualifications do I need to become a diesel mechanic?
Vocational.co.za says that diesel mechanic jobs form part of the Manufacturing, Engineering, and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (or MerSETA) landscape. To be able to put your application forward for such a career role, you should:
- be at least 16 years of age;
- have a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 1 (i.e. the equivalent of a Grade 9 in the school system) with a pass in Mathematics;
- have achieved an Intec Diesel Mechanic Certificate, or the equivalent thereof (i.e. an Occupational Certificate: Diesel Mechanic*, which is offered by a wide range of technical institutions, or a Diploma in Motor Engineering);
- have completed at least four years of apprenticeship training;
- possess an excellent knowledge of mechanics and the workings of a diesel engine
* Note: In South Africa, you can pursue an Occupational Certificate: Diesel Mechanic at the likes of the following institutions:
What additional traits are more than a nice-to-have in this career line?
Generally speaking, a diesel mechanic should be physically fit for heavy work; enjoy working with his or her hands; possess an excellent knowledge of auto components and machinery, together with a favourable mechanical aptitude; be comfortable working in noisy environments and have enviable hand-eye coordination (your eyesight and hearing should be really good); be meticulous and accurate, with great manual dexterity; possess basic welding skills, and also have the ability to troubleshoot until a solution is found for whatever issue/s you may encounter within your work.
How can a diesel mechanic remain up to date on technological advances within and other changes related to their field?
Both Business Fleet Africa and the Truck & Freight publication recommend the 10th Automechanika Johannesburg trade fair, scheduled for Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand from 28 to 30 October 2025, as the top platform for innovation, professional development, and networking within the automotive and commercial vehicle sectors.
What can I expect to earn as a diesel mechanic?
An entry-level diesel mechanic in South Africa, say with less than three years of experience, can expect to earn around R6 500 gross per month (or R78 000 per annum). Once you have gained more than 20 years of experience, you will probably take home R27 000 or more per month (R324 000 per annum, minimum). The average salary in this career line, however, is R19 406 gross per month (or R232 872 on an annual basis).
Which companies could I end up working for?
Just a few of the companies listed on top job portals in South Africa, include the likes of Bosch Care Service, Njilo Consulting & Logistics, Universal Paper and Plastics, MAN Automotive, Frimax Foods, and Oza Holdings.
Which books should I tap into to keep my knowledge of the industry current?
Tekmetric suggests that a combination of the following should have pride of place on your nightstand:
- Auto Repair For Dummies, by Deanna Sclar;
- How Cars Work, by Tom Newton;
- Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach, by Jack Erjavec & Rob Thompson;
- Advanced Automotive Fault Diagnosis, by Tom Denton;
- and for a bit of fun, The Long Way Round, by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman (which details the pair’s epic motorcycle journey from London to New York, through Europe, Asia, and North America, inspired by the adventures of Ted Simon. Expect challenges, diverse cultures, and plenty of camaraderie).
Can a diesel mechanic learn to work on new energy or electric vehicles?
According to knowledge-sharing platform Quora, a diesel mechanic is one of the best professions to make the shift towards working on new energy vehicles (NEVs) or electric vehicles (EVs), as the machinery in use across industries becomes increasingly greener.
Because diesel mechanics have a strong foundation in mechanics and internal combustion engines, their upskilling and retraining will involve courses, workshops and practical training, as well as certifications, on how the electrical components (i.e. the battery) and electronic systems of an NEV/EV are designed to run.
While NEVs/EVs have a range of unique features, the underlying principles of vehicle maintenance and repair will remain similar – an understanding of vehicle mechanics, diagnosing problems, and using tools are transferable skills that will be needed under an NEV/EV bonnet too, as their prevalence in South Africa grows.
To make the transition, or add the ability to work on new energy and electric vehicles to your portfolio, consider signing up for one of the 10 courses offered by Noble Prog, such as: Introduction to Electric Vehicles: Fundamentals and Applications, Electric Vehicle Retrofitting: Converting Gasoline Cars to EVs, EV Maintenance and Troubleshooting for Technicians, Electric Vehicle Business Models and Market Trends, Autonomous and Connected Electric Vehicles, EV Battery Recycling and Sustainability Practices, Electric Vehicle Software and Embedded Systems, Advanced Electric Vehicle Design and Development, and EV Powertrains and Battery Technology.
