Position: Candidate Attorney (Conveyancing & Property Law Focus) Location: Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal Position Type: Practical Vocational Training (Articles of Clerkship \/ PVT Contract) Reporting To: Principal \/ Designated Conveyancing Director Position Overview A dynamic and leading law firm in Pietermaritzburg is seeking an ambitious, highly motivated law graduate to complete their Practical Vocational Training (Articles of Clerkship) under a 2-year PVT contract. This role is ideal for a candidate eager to build a specialized career in Conveyancing, Property Law, and Commercial Real Estate Transactions. Working directly alongside experienced Conveyancers and Directors, you will gain hands-on practical exposure to property transfers, mortgage bond registrations, Deeds Office procedures, and specialized property litigation. Key Responsibilities & Learning Exposure 1. Conveyancing & Property Drafting Experience Draft standard and complex transfer documents, deeds of sale, powers of attorney, sectional title registrations, and consents under supervision. Assist in preparing mortgage bond registration documentation for major retail bank panels. Manage rates clearance applications with local municipalities and Body Corporate\/HOA consent applications. Prepare and lodge transfer duty declarations via SARS eFiling. 2. Deeds Office Attendance & Registrations Attend the Pietermaritzburg Deeds Office regularly to inspect, lodge, monitor, and execute conveyancing files. Review examination notes from Deeds Office examiners and assist in clearing requisitions\/technical queries. Examine title deeds, servitude conditions, and restrictive title conditions in real estate records. 3. Client Consultation & Stakeholder Management Interface with estate agents, bond originators, buyers, sellers, and bank representatives to deliver transaction updates. Attend client consultations for document execution while maintaining strict FICA compliance and identity verification standards. Provide mobile document execution support in line with firm service standards when required. 4. Legal Research & Property Litigation Support Conduct legal research on property law issues, servitudes, sectional title disputes, municipal rates challenges, and land tenure rights. Assist with drafting pleadings, notices, affidavits, and correspondence for property-related civil litigation. Manage file administration, accounting fee allocations, and compliance tasks across the lifecycle of transactions. Qualifications & Requirements Education: Completed LLB Degree from a recognized South African university (or in final semester\/awaiting graduation). Completion of Practical Legal Training (PLT) \/ School for Legal Practice is advantageous. LPC Eligibility: Fully eligible to register a 2-year Practical Vocational Training (PVT) contract with the Legal Practice Council (LPC) KwaZulu-Natal. License & Mobility: Valid South African Driver’s License and reliable personal transport (essential for Deeds Office trips, client visits, and municipal errands). Core Skills & Attributes: Strong academic record with a clear interest or elective background in Property Law, Land Reform, or Commercial Law. High attention to detail, strong analytical capabilities, and excellent legal drafting skills. Professional demeanor with superb verbal and written communication skills. Ability to thrive under pressure in a high-volume, fast-paced conveyancing environment.
