Chief Accountant

POSITION INFO:
A well-established organisation is seeking a Chief Accountant to join its Finance team. Reporting to the Financial Controller , this role will be responsible for overseeing the accounting function, ensuring accurate financial records, strong financial controls, effective month-end and year-end processes, and statutory compliance. Key Responsibilities: Lead, supervise and develop the accounting team, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are consistently met. Oversee the month-end and year-end close , including journals, accruals, provisions, prepayments and supporting schedules. Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and review balance-sheet reconciliations. Oversee operational accounting functions including accounts payable, cash book, bank reconciliations, fixed assets, inventory, payroll entries, intercompany accounting and foreign-currency revaluations . Ensure accurate inventory valuation, cost-of-sales accounting and fixed-asset records. Prepare and review VAT, income tax, provisional tax and other statutory schedules and returns . Coordinate audit requirements and ensure accounting controls and audit actions are effectively managed. Prepare intercompany reconciliations, confirmations and settlement schedules . Support cash-flow reporting, payment forecasting and working-capital analysis. Maintain accounting procedures, close checklists and finance records. Support SAP\/ERP system improvements, testing, upgrades and process automation . Provide accurate financial information, accounting explanations and variance inputs to the Financial Controller. Support budgets, forecasts, reporting and various finance projects as required. Job Experience and Skills Required: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Financial Management or a related field . A recognised professional accounting designation will be advantageous. 10+ years' progressive accounting experience , including at least 4 years in a management role . Strong knowledge of IFRS, South African statutory requirements, taxation and accounting controls . Advanced Excel skills. Practical SAP or comparable ERP experience. Experience within a multinational, manufacturing or distribution environment will be advantageous. Exposure to J-SOX\/SOX-type controls will be beneficial. Apply now!
