Construction Supervisor – Electrical (Mining)
One of our clients, a leading international mining organisation focused on the safe, responsible and sustainable development of its mining operations, is seeking an experienced Construction Supervisor – Electrical to join their project team. The position will be based at a major mining project in Postmasburg, Northern Cape, and will be responsible for providing visible frontline leadership and day-to-day supervision of electrical construction activities, including substations, power distribution systems and overhead power lines.The successful candidate will oversee contractor execution, ensure compliance with approved drawings and specifications, monitor SHE, quality, productivity and progress, and support testing, energisation, completion and handover activities.
POSITION INFO:
Minimum Requirements: National Diploma, National N Diploma, Trade Test or recognised technical qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related electrical discipline . Minimum 8 years' relevant electrical construction experience within mining, infrastructure or heavy industrial projects. Proven site supervision experience within electrical construction environments. Demonstrated experience supervising substations, power distribution systems and overhead power lines . Experience with OHL foundations, tower\/pole erection, conductor and earth-wire stringing, sagging, jointing, earthing, testing and energisation . Strong knowledge of electrical construction methods, workfront preparation and contractor supervision. Experience interpreting electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, OHL route profiles, structure schedules, foundation details and stringing charts . Knowledge of electrical construction planning, inspection, testing, commissioning and completion processes. Strong understanding of electrical safety, working at height, lifting, stringing, earthing, isolation and energisation controls . Knowledge of applicable South African mining, electrical, construction and environmental legislation . Experience working within an owner-team, EPCM or principal-contractor environment will be advantageous. Previous experience on mining infrastructure, iron ore, process plant, materials handling or heavy industrial projects will be advantageous. Professional registration with ECSA, SACPCMP or an equivalent recognised body will be advantageous. Formal qualification in Project Management or Construction Management will be advantageous. Valid South African driver's licence . Valid medical fitness certificate for mine and construction-site access. Relevant legal appointment or competency certification, where required. Proficient in MS Office, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint . Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving and contractor-management skills. Willingness to work on a construction roster and remain site-based for the duration of the project. Roles & Responsibilities: Electrical & OHL Construction Supervision Supervise daily electrical and overhead power line construction activities. Coordinate contractor crews, specialist plant, materials, access, outages and workfront interfaces. Review electrical and OHL work packs, drawings, route profiles, structure schedules, foundation details, stringing charts, method statements and inspection and test plans. Verify electrical and OHL workfront readiness before construction activities commence. Monitor tower and pole erection, conductor and earth-wire stringing, sagging, jointing, terminations, earthing and testing. Ensure installations comply with approved designs, specifications, statutory requirements and manufacturer requirements. Monitor installed quantities, productivity and progress against approved schedules. Participate in constructability reviews and identify practical execution constraints and improvement opportunities. Coordinate interfaces between OHL, civil foundations, substations, protection, telecommunications, roads, rail, operations and third-party services. SHE & Quality Ensure all electrical and OHL activities comply with applicable SHE requirements, legislation and approved controls . Stop unsafe or non-compliant work and escalate critical risks. Lead and participate in pre-starts, toolbox talks, risk assessments and critical-control checks. Verify compliance with approved method statements, permits, isolation procedures, earthing arrangements, lifting plans and rescue plans. Maintain effective housekeeping, barricading, exclusion zones and access controls. Identify and control hazards associated with live-system interfaces, induced voltages, working at height, lifting, stringing and crossings. Witness inspections and testing and ensure quality requirements are met. Support punch-list close-out, completion, testing, commissioning and handover activities. Contractor & Workfront Management Support contractor mobilisation, induction and workfront readiness. Monitor contractor labour, plant, productivity, quality and progress. Address field deviations, underperformance and non-compliance promptly. Serve as the day-to-day owner-team field interface for electrical and OHL contractors. Measure and verify completed work and installed quantities. Maintain accurate daily diaries, progress records, structure registers, drum schedules, sagging records, test sheets, redlines, photographs and completion documentation. Support contract administration and minimise the risk of claims and rework. Planning, Reporting & Risk Management Contribute to daily and weekly work planning, look-ahead schedules, stringing plans, outage plans and workfront readiness reviews. Identify construction risks relating to live-line proximity, induced voltages, working at height, lifting, road\/rail crossings, weather, wildfire, access and public interfaces. Monitor weather, lightning, fire conditions, ground conditions, access and outages affecting construction activities. Prepare daily and weekly progress reports covering safety, quantities, productivity, quality, outages, constraints and corrective actions. Provide accurate progress and quantity information to project controls. Participate in route walkdowns, crossing reviews, pre-energisation inspections, punch-list and completion reviews. Stakeholder & Project Coordination Coordinate electrical and OHL activities with engineering, survey, SHE, quality, project controls, operations and environmental teams. Facilitate the resolution of technical queries, access constraints, crossings, outages and construction interfaces. Maintain effective relationships with contractors, consultants, suppliers, regulatory authorities and other stakeholders. Provide field input into testing, commissioning, energisation and operational-readiness activities. Support the Construction Manager and Project Manager in managing construction risks, constraints, quality and delivery. Closing Date: Submissions for this vacancy will close on 14 September 2026.
